I don't know if he was a church goer or not. He was definitely rough around the edges. After the second tale of dead animals I began to wonder about the veracity of his cougar sightings.
After someone I lived with (nope, not me) fed some chicken bones to our dog, in the summer, not noticing the dog was dead for one day or so until it began to smell, and having to dispose of the rotting creature whose bits were dripping away to the woods with the bucket of the tractor along with the doghouse, since then I can't stand to see dead dogs.
I have to say it's very death gore metal in a typical american way.

Spa is right, it can be difficult to get around Europe - especially if the country you are going to is either not in the EU or is part of the eastern block.
I think all over the world there is a solid core of metal fans - we all know a true metal supporter is so for life! I know that even though the 'popular' music here in NZ at the moment is stupid hip hop bullshit, but there are plenty metal fans here too! But it is a long way for a band to travel, to come and play for us. And our population compared to other countries is miniscule, only 4 million. |

What I find really sick is the latest "Chupacabra" catch, by some taxidermist in TX. That specimen is a dog. It might very well be a bald dog, but the
breed exists, and it has a name. Xole is the shortened version of it's long name. It was just a scared hungry dog, he poinsoned. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by guidogodoy from Monday, September 07, 2009 9:34:49 AM)

It makes me sick to my stomach to have to agree with you that America is so commercialized!!!! At the same time, it's also what helped commercialize Metal in the late 70's and 80's..."if American's will buy it...." but I'll put "our" core Metalheads with "yours" anytime!!! Metalheads, I would argue, are the most loyal fans world wide!!!!!!!! Keep the faith, Izzystone!! But it is a long way for a band to travel, to come and play for us. And our population compared to other countries is miniscule, only 4 million. |

Wow that is a beutiful sight! I'll add that to the neverending lists of places I would love to see before I die!
Yes, I know all about the discount stores clientel. They are sometimes suprisingly scary! Saw a man on one of those scooters with amputated legs one time, and I swear his girth still must have weighed in at 400 pounds sans legs! That little cart must have been laboring under his weight! Would not suprise me if the battery died on him before his shopping was done and he had to ring for a back up! Sad really, as if it was not for his head he seemed as though he could just roll where ever he needed to go. I would laugh, but it's not funny. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Head banger from Saturday, September 05, 2009 1:38:31 PM) | | Head banger wrote: | | speaking of you and guido bemoaning your circumstances I was in a discount store yesterday. you can tell its a good discount store if the people there make you think that walmart shopers are atractive. the woman with a bald spot, 1 tooth (I didnt peer to far into her mouth but I could see 1 and it was wide open) was not the least atractive shoper. you also got to love it when some people dress such that a cheap hooker on a streetcorner looks more respectable.
at least I am in a city of 1 milion (or right outside)
and I am three hours from a real waterfall, niagra is ok, but this is awesome.
takakawa (sp) falls BC. 3.5 hours away from me. 396 feet I think. | | spapad wrote: | | Oh my God, and me and Guids bemoan our circumstances! That is a hell of a long ways! When I was going to Florida last year each time I saw Canada plates I wondered just how long had they traveled? When I lived in Northern VA, I once thought on a whim I would drive to the Niagra Falls, but then I saw it was 18 hours away and decided that was too much for a weekend whim. LOL | | Head banger wrote: | | yeah, to go to one recorded would be cool. 10 hours would not get me to a major US city, unless you were to count great falls as major. didnt think so. think 12 hours would get me to seatle.
| | spapad wrote: | | I would have cringed at 10 hours as well, UNLESS the Management would have told us about the Hollywood, FL show then I would have drove the 10 hours with not a single complaint! Damnit. Must not be any Major US cities right under your part of Cananda? Shame. Sorry! I do miss the 80's when bands went EVERYWHERE! | | Head banger wrote: | | yep. if they were within a 10 hour drive of me I might have considered it. but the closest this year I got was 22 hours to colorado. but... what should I do? sure a shit if I moved to somewhere they have never missed they would never go back. plus to stay in canada that would mean living in toronto. prison would be better | | spapad wrote: | | Not to be whining but the entire southern US east coast was missed last year. Except the one show at Bristow, VA.
They have not played NC, SC, in so long I think the last time they were there was turbo? Alabama, Mississippi and Louisianna can forget about it! They would have to to to Texas, TN or GA. Florida got a few shows this year and one in GA, but that's it. If your a fan, and live in these parts, well you simply have to face facts that travel will always be a part of it. | | Head banger wrote: | | yeah we got a good tour in 2008. Calgary had a shortened set cause they were in a festival, but it was a good show. | | spapad wrote: | | Actually, I was not refering to band travel in europe as much as fan travel in europe.
Even with the shows they did play in the US this year, there are people who had to do some serious traveling to get to a show.
HB, sorry Canada took a miss this year, but were they not there more last year? I could be wrong and I haven't checked the back dates. This show was largely due because 12 shows in the US is just very limited, and that is what they did last year.
It will certainly NEVER be like the days of old where I could have seen them at least 2 times in VA once in Maryland, twice in NC, and then could have branched out to TN, they will never tour like that again, sadly those days are long gone. | | ron h wrote: | | Euro Disney doesn't do well because Europe has real castles and we don't!!
Visa issues aren't that big of a deal because management takes care of a lot of that stuff in advance. As far as the actual travel, they could fly a charter or helicopter in if it was that bad. But all that does is reinforce why I think they play fewer shows in larger venues there (and Europe was just 1 example). How many shows did Priest play in Canada?? One, maybe two? Austrailia?
Remember, I'm just a fan giving an opinion here and don't know for sure one way or the other...an educated guess if you will. The real reason(s) may have nothing at all to do with any of what's been mentioned here, but this topic does make me think...damn you Prowler!!! | | spapad wrote: | | Strat has some valid points Ron. Travel in europe is not the easiest thing to do, there are visas involved, and the roads are terrible in alot of places as they still follow the contour of the land and that means while you drive up a mountain forever your not really making much headway, or you drive along a coastline hugging every turn in and out lots of mileage with very little progress. I would be like befor the interstates where built in the US, long winding roads that take you forever to get somewhere, and then imagine having to show visa's at each state line. Big pain in the ass. For instance, why does Euro Disney do so poorly, because travel is such a pain to get there, Why not just hop a plane to Florida and you only need one visa to do it!
So, it's not easy to move about europe in vast milage.
The reason the bands play so many venues here is the area of the US is so vast, and in general most americans are too lazy to put forth too much mileage to go see a show. They may do it for a vacation but many of them simply wouldn't bother for a show.
Ron you may have had that many accessbile shows, but the closest show to me, would have been a five and a half hour trip, that was the CLOSEST, which I didn't go to, but I went to the third closest to me which was a 7 and half hour trip, close to 400 miles, if not more. The second closest would have been Pittsburgh at six and a half hours. So not everyone had shows that close to them.

Hmm... If Im not much mistaken, the nearest they came to me on this tour is Vienna... WHich is about 3 or 4 hours drive away... On an empty road, with no stops, with favourable wind. That is if they dont reschedule the shows in Zagreb and Belgrade, which they still havent, and I dont know what they are waiting for.
IDK, they certainly have a packed schedule on the American tour, maybe thats why they find it hard to do more shows elsewhere. IDK, we would have to ask them. Or wheover organises those shows for them.

If I'm not mistaken, Priest played all of the cities...if they wer're to only play 1 maybe 2 of these cities, there wouldn't have been an empty seat in the house and could have probably played (a) bigger venue(s). IDK about that... Theres about twice as many people living in Europe than in whole of north America. They could double the number of European shows, and still play in full venues. What is true, I guess, is that all the borders and stuff makes it more time consuming and expensive to travel, thats why it makes it difficult when they skip enitre countries on tours.
IDK, I usualy envy you guys in the states... It seems like whenever someone goes on tour there, they play everywhere where there are at least ten fans.

I think it's because of the size of the States. Overseas you've got smaller countries grouped together, like our New England states, therefore there's no need to play a 30 show tour in say Europe...a couple of shows will do it and the fans flock because there's so few. Using where I live as an example, I could have caught Priest at any one of 6 of their shows all within 500 miles **Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianaplois, Detroit or Cleveland**
That being said, we don't have a Download Festival type event. At one time we had the US Festival, which if continued it could have rivaled a Download, but that never happened. Just an opinion off the top of my head...but it's certainly not for a lack of enthusiasm!!!

Why is it that some bands can play larger venues overseas but come to the US and have to play clubs (if they even tour the US at all)? Thoughts? Comments?

speaking of you and guido bemoaning your circumstances I was in a discount store yesterday. you can tell its a good discount store if the people there make you think that walmart shopers are atractive. the woman with a bald spot, 1 tooth (I didnt peer to far into her mouth but I could see 1 and it was wide open) was not the least atractive shoper. you also got to love it when some people dress such that a cheap hooker on a streetcorner looks more respectable.
at least I am in a city of 1 milion (or right outside)
and I am three hours from a real waterfall, niagra is ok, but this is awesome.
takakawa (sp) falls BC. 3.5 hours away from me. 396 feet I think. I would have cringed at 10 hours as well, UNLESS the Management would have told us about the Hollywood, FL show then I would have drove the 10 hours with not a single complaint! Damnit. Must not be any Major US cities right under your part of Cananda? Shame. Sorry! I do miss the 80's when bands went EVERYWHERE!

Priest are loyal to their core group of fans and they'll play anywhere here (and we thank them for it) but I think they pay a price for it as well.

Thoughts? Comments?

Very interesting topic ...
I did notice the unusual tour pattern of the Priest-beast this summer - compared to previous tours.
I live relatively close to Chicago ... Priest actually played our city for the first time since Vengeance a couple years back.
I was unbelievably EMBARRASSED ... an 8000-capacity arena had all of 1500-2000 people.
Nice in my opinion - kinda like having the guys all to myself (teehee) ... and the played like there were 50K of us!
I think a lot of the tour choices are based on past history and supportive radio stations and fans ...
It ain't cheap putting on one of these tours ... you'd like to think ALL the folks involved at least break even.
Tours are a far cry from what they were in the 80s ... even Alpine Valley in East Troy Wisconsin only hosts 6 shows or so a summer ...
Jimmy Buffet being the standard annual show - couldn't tell you the last time I even heard a concert plugged for up there.
Strange times ... and the world wonders why it's in the toilet.
Gotta love the internet ... you can access your favorite people without ever leaving the safety of your home.
Thank God bands like Priest keep doing what they do ... sometimes, I miss the day of having to choose which bands to NOT see so I can see the ones I really WANT to see. |

There is some great dialogue going on here and that is why I really like message boards. Someone mentioned promotion, there is not shit done for promotion in Florida (except for things like Britney or Coldplay as someone mentioned). I do find it funny that the rock stations will show up at these shows acting like they support whatever band but when you ask them about the band's latest release they look like you asked them to solve a physics problem. I have only been to Europe in the Navy back in the 90's and I remember going into the records stores and finding bands that I did not know were still around (for me it was Helloween at the time) and were making new music. We stopped in Malta one time and missed Maiden by a few weeks. I would love to hit a European show just to see the difference in the crowds.
I also did not realize it was so difficult to get around Eurpoe. Thanks for enlightening me. |

Lol, no... There are plenty of highways, and visas arent a problem either. Whole border control thing has become very relaxed since the Cold war ended, and in the case of European union, there isnt any of it altogether.
The problem is just that they do so few shows, that if there isnt one in your town, the next town may be hours of driving away. Thats from the fans perspective, anyway. Traveling for the band is a lot easier, I imagine, with all those cheap airlines. Strat has some valid points Ron.

Hey Strat...To better illustrate my thinking which has been known to be flawed lol here's what I mean...
My home to...
...downtown Chicago 18 miles
...Milwaukee 103 miles
...Indianapolis 143 miles
...Detroit 236 miles
...Cleveland 281 miles
...St. Louis 423 miles
If I'm not mistaken, Priest played all of the cities...if they wer're to only play 1 maybe 2 of these cities, there wouldn't have been an empty seat in the house and could have probably played (a) bigger venue(s). Priest are loyal to their core group of fans and they'll play anywhere here (and we thank them for it) but I think they pay a price for it as well.

I was watching That Metal Show the other day and they had a special from the Download Festival. It seemed to me that there seems to be a greater outlet for metal bands overseas than there is in the US. I am not talking about the intensity of the fans but a greater chance for exposure of bands overseas. Why is it that some bands can play larger venues overseas but come to the US and have to play clubs (if they even tour the US at all)? Thoughts? Comments?

Also...it's not how many people there are here or there, it's how many Metal fans there are. Priest might sell out Detroit and Cleveland and play to half filled Tampa and Nashville...logistics play a huge part as we are scattered throughout where that's not necessarily the case there... There's no doubt in my mind that money plays a huge role in it. As much as I love Priest and will bang my head to the end with them, where popularity and promotion goes these bands of yore get nowhere near as much as say a band like Coldplay does now and I couldn't tell you one song of theirs!! lol
Music of today does not inspire me at all. There are a few exceptions, but nothing that really stands head and shoulders above the rest. What's in today is forgotten tomorrow...no such thing as loyalty anymore!! That's a sad testement to todays lables and unfortunate for the youth of today...but do they really care?? That's why I love being 43 and was around in the 70's and 80's and caught most all of it as it happend!!!!
I remember when MTV aired the Memphis Priest show among many others April Wine, REO Speedwagon, Billy Squire to name a few...Vh1 Classic does a good job airing and promoting Hard Rock and Classic Metal and MTV2 still airs Headbangers Ball, but it's not like back in 80's early 90's...but before Vh1 Classic came around, there wasn't much on the airwaves for us as MTV went into reality shows and game shows and all the other stuff they do.
