TOPIC: Algy Ward Tank
[aceroperuano] Sunday, May 13, 2012 8:12:34 PM
So I have created this topic to talk about Tank cause I read Tank is going to put out a new album this year, I was impressed taking in account that the band was in a hiatus since 2004 album "Still At War" due to Algy Ward(bass player, vocals, founding member of the band) illness that make him unable to record and perform live, due to this the band replace him with Doogie White(Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Rainbow, Pink Cream 69) for live perfomances and even recorded an album in 2010(War Machine), I thought this was just a momentary thing since Algy is the voice, mastermind and soul of Tank, and the right thing was to wait til he get better, but in the end Algy didn´t get better and the rest of the band continue without him, now this is not like Judas Priest case,  when, even if I didn't like the stuff with Ripper,  it was a project made with 4/5 of a classic Judas Priest line-up, but this does'nt even have a half of Tank classic lineup, not even original band members, plus this version of the band don't have the blessings and approval of Algy, who actually is the owner of the the intelectual property, name and logo of the band, so..I think you see my point, also Algy is putting out a new album, Sturmpanzer, that for my personal taste sounds more like the original Tank than this new Tank, here is a sample:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8I01XvJvE4

To know more about the reasons why Algy can't play alive and why oes he not approve the new "Tank"(currently touring) check out this links:

The main reason pepople call this thrash is maybe cause it reallly have a strong thrash metal sound, the death metal thing, well that thing is relative, I mean the song black metal from Venom is dopes not sound exactly like ehat most people think today as black metal(ex: old Darkthrone,Mayhem, Abruptum, Conqueror, 1349, Watain, etc ), plus for me at least calling something doesn't make it that something, at least for me death metal began with Possessed and Death, there also this problem about "what makes a musical genre that genre?" some prime the lyrical content, other a particular sound, for example death metal have a aprticular sound, a particular kind of drumming, riffs and type of vocals, also the lyrics may vary, bot in essence are about death, suffering, serial killers, murdering, rotting stuff/bodies, and the irony and humour of the mortal nature of men, vikings, battles, anti-religion and philosphical are also popular, but these lates are also popular in black metal lately, so...you see my point??musically speaking Power From Hell have many elements form thrash: drumming, fast pace, palm mutting, etc, also have punkish vocals(the band began as an hardcore punk act I think), so to some extent it's actually kinda difficult to classify, Imean, Metallica use to call themselves a power metal act in the first days isn't it? I tend to classify music to what it sounds to my ears, but I can understand why other people would call this death metal, all in all the lyrics of the album are kinda death metal plus it have that raw vibe of early death metal albums, in the end this came uot in the middle of the 80's when heavy metal sub genres were still undefined, and to some people this was for the best, seriously sometimes I have heard really bad or stupid discussions between metalheads just because some call this band  death metal or black metal, hell, there were bands that even played a type of music that had 3 types of subgenres of metal in it, if it is a messured discussion  just for the sake of fun, I'm ok, but when people made fucking wars of it between metalheads, it just became silly, may Fenriz got it right about that particular matter.

Now some  albums that were called thrash that were almost on the verge of being death metal are Sepultura Bestial Devastation and Vulcano Bloody Vengeance, the first one never called themselves death metal band, the second one it is a really good example of a band that had a song called death metal and actually sound like death metal(at least more than Onslaught I think).

P.S.: Hi to all, maybe no one remembered me form before, I was the peruvian guy who posted here till 2008 I think, anyway, I have comeback(I stopped due to college stuff and other personal shit) so I wish I could post here on a more regular basis.

Wow, just...wow, I mean I'm not a hardcore fan of the genre, I just like a cople of bands, just in case I didn't left that clear, but anyway I actually never listened to that particulary song, I guess cause what I have listened from Tigertailz was just a couple of songs some friend of mine pass me, like a sort of "compilation", I guess he omited the ballads knowing I'm not a big fan,oh now I'm so gonna  beat up that motherfucker for this hahaha,  plus I actually never seen a video of them, I'm not a music video person THAT much(I stick more to listen the music)and now....well, maybe I was wrong about Tigetailz being sleaze, maybe  because I didn't seen the whole picture, just a frame, but I stick it to the other bands, I still like Dangerous Toys, Ski Row, and early Motley Crue, If I have to make a proportion of type of music I listen: 80%metal(heavy,thrash,death,black,etc), 15%hardcore/crust punk, 5% miscelaneous(sleaze rock, hard rock, salsa, boleros, etc).

[aceroperuano] Thursday, May 06, 2010 12:02:20 AM

To be completely honest I used to think the same way,I used to put bands like Bon Jovi and Dangerous Toys in the same bag/label(glam/pussy rock bands),  but then I said to myself: how bad they can be? I give 'em a listen, some of them were popy crap but some others actually has an edgy sound(Skid Row, early Motley Crue, Tigertailz and Dangerous Toys), most of the bands  labelled as sleaze rock were bands doing a more edgy  and less panzy hard rock, they had  some ballads but the edgy sound was predominant and the lyrics were more about street/drinking life than lovey dovey crap,  in contrast with the Cinderella, Poison and Bon Jovi crap glam/teen girl music, that's why I like the sleaze rock bands I listen,I have no mixed feeling with othrer more extre music I listenI mean  I have no problem listen Dangerous Toys's "Hellacious Acres" and then  later give a listen to Deströyer 666 "Phoenix  Rising" or Vomitor's  "Bleeding The Priest", matter of tastes I guess.

Oh, by the way, as curious data  the  Dangerous Toys vocalist  was also vocalist of the technical thrash metal band Watchtower, plus the guy is also a big Priest fan, this is an ecerpt form an interview:

FIB MUSIC:  I was privileged to catch a performance of Sad Wings, your Judas Priest tribute band, at a show in Dallas. You guys seemed to have a lot of fun with that. What's it like to do that project?

JM:  I love Priest. I have toured with Priest, I can die a happy man being able to say that. The Sad Wings gig is just alot of fun, me and some friends came up with the idea to form the tribute after seeing a few tributes around the Texas area having so much fun, it was a no brainer that we needed a Priest tribute in Austin. There is one in Dallas as you know called Judas Rising, they have been real cool and we are playing with them June 20th in Dallas.

PD: If you are interested, give 'em a try:

I'm not upset or else, just making the point that many times people call crappy "metal" bands that actually are not metal at all, calling them crappy for something they never intendend to sound like(Metal), for example LA Guns, for me is one good sleaze rock band(sleaze rock is an  actual music genre,ex: Dangerous Toys, G n' R, Nasty Idols,Every Mother's Nightmare, Skid Row,etc) , of course if you put hem the label of metal someone could say:"that's metal???!! if it is, then is crappy metal!!", you see what am talking about??, on the other side I find this thread kinda fun, If people want to put band that aren't metal but are related in some sort of way to the genre, that's ok to me, sorry for my comments but I think a little of controversy is good to put some spice in topics haha.

PD: I find Tokyo Blade pretty metal to me, their firstwo albums are vey NWOBHM-esque,  their later work, of course, slowly became more comercial hard rock/glam metal/glam rock oriented, like Saxon or Celtic Frost have done once in their careers.

That's probably my favorite Sepultura's album, at least for me, is it finest moment, my choice of the day are two albums:

A classic Thrash Metal album, a malevolent canadian assault of fast and deathly speed metal:

And a seminal album of the metalpunk genre, an effective blend of aggressive punk and NWOBHM sound:

There's something I don't understand here, this thread is for crappiest METAL album, but many  here has post albums that have nothing to do with metal,  many are hard rock or glam rock bands, just for the record glam metal does not exist, made up of media to sell glam bands as metal cause metal use to sell in the old days, but basically they are hard rock bands, there are many crappy albums in metal, that are actually metal and....well, are crappy: for example Tygers of Pang Tang "The Cage" bland  generic heavy metal, or Tokyo Blade "Blackhearts and Jaded Spades" repetititive boring album, also we have Kreator's 90's alternative metal crap albums, Testament "The Ritual", slow down groovy alternative  thrash metal?? no f***ing  way!!, Celtic Frost popy "Cold Lake"....and the list goes on.

[aceroperuano] Friday, April 30, 2010 1:51:09 PM

High Spirits is recent band I particulary like,  the voice isn't  "wow!" but is pretty decent for a demo, anyway I think is enough classic metal innfluenced to put a couple of song here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqDaUPn9Ziw&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJu2M7MC_KQ&feature=related

About the topic: I actually agree about golden age of Heavy Metal being completely gone, the passion for classic Heavy Metal(Saxon, Diamond Head, Judas Priest, etc) will be  dramatically reduced, most kids today are or into death/gore/black  metal or trendy mallcore and crapcore, that can't be changed, kids always want the louder and noisier music, even if is crap music(mallcore), and old classic metal bands dissapearing is not helping, and as any kind of music, Is not gonna actually disappear, just reduced the amount of listeners, I hardly believe that a  new band will appear and gonna be as great as the traditional metal giants, so we must accept that Heavy Metal will become a more dark and underground movement that it is right now, I can live  with that, for  me this was never about belonging to a larger group or a trend, it just will be more difficult to find metalheads, true metalheads, in the future.

PD: hey J.D., that's one great speed metal album I tell ya, Exciter has always been an amazing speed metal trio, and talking about metal trios, have you ever listened Warfare??, great britsh punkish metal vibe:

Aw, man, there are actually a shitload of bands rthat try and many times succed at sounding like classic oldschool heavy metal bands,if they don't get media exposure, too bad, but metal is not a fucking mainstream music listeners, is for fucking metalheads!!! you want classic heavy metal sound bands?? search it!! or made your own classic metal sound band for fucksake!!probably the amount of real metalheads who enjoy oldschool metal will decrease, but real metalheads will survive, plus, I give you guys a tip: try search bands from outside!!! like Europe and South America scenes!!! most metal bands from USA, no offense, are Pantera/Machine Head/Slikpnot/Hatebreed worshippers and metalcore trendy bands, when in Europe and South America are most influenced by are Judas Priest, Saxon, Warfare, old Slayer, Celtic Frost,Razor,Voivod, Anvil, Sarcofago, Pestilence, Vio-Lence, Violent Force, Bolthrower, old Mayhem and so kind of bands, also Canadian scene is a good choice,oh and some times there are actually good USA metal band hardcore influenced by oldschool heavy metal, anyway, this are some classic heavy metal/NWOBHM influenced bands: from Mexico: http://www.myspace.com/voltaxband from Canada: http://www.myspace.com/skullfisted from USA: http://www.myspace.com/highspiritsrock http://www.myspace.com/waitandprayinsane (this band sound like show no mercy Slayer) From Peru: http://www.myspace.com/cobraperu From Australia(very AC/DC sound): http://www.myspace.com/airbourne From Sweden: http://www.myspace.com/enforcerswe http://www.myspace.com/helvetetsport From Poland: http://www.myspace.com/crystalviperofficial There are more but I'm too lazy to put them now, maybe later. Maybe any of these bands are great as the classics but at least they are trying to preserve classic heavy metal, and that cvounts for something, I guess. And don't even make begin with oldschool thrash metal sound new bands, because that ones are in big ass amounts.

The mighty  "CRANIUM":

Anybody?? this band is from Sweden, said that many things related to quality metal comes to my head, in the 90's were all people were too much occupied doing alternative rock and grunge stuff, while in metal scene, decayed it was the few warriors left were doing black or death metal this guys dare to do the unthinkable: making assraping satanic speed metal in a time ruled by Pearl Jam  and Cobain cock suckers(not Nirvana, all in all have some kinda respectable stuff, I just fucking hate the fucking Jesuchrist Superstar status of Cobain), a joke band?maybe but in the end I don't think so, too humorous for his owns sake?? you guess,  but you can't deny this guys were doing a speed metal war against synth pop and disco music and doing metal with passion, balls, aggression and a bloodthirst for posers blood haven't seen since Sheepdog McLaren Razor's era; I can't stop recomending his 3 albums: Speed Metal Satan, Speed Metal Slaughter, and Speed Metal Sentence,  while the first is a more raw approach  to what we call today black thrash, the other 2 albums only can be described satanic speed metal with annoying yet enjoyable(a contradiction I know but even it works like that) vokills, 3 pieces of fierce demonic speed metal assault to your ears, defenders of steel in an era when nobody gived a damn for speed metal.

Not your classic Heavy Metal band, or album whatsoever, but this album is a cornerstone  in what black metal represents and is all about, is a minimalistic, raw, dark, evil, cold, simple yet effective in projecting malificense, uncountable copycats norwegian black metal bands tried to emulate this sound and to capture his aura, almost all failed, today the bands is oriented into a more black/punk metal sound,  a crust/speed satanic and rock and roll oriented metal if you prefere, what is still of my like.

[aceroperuano] Tuesday, September 09, 2008 3:23:28 AM
I just end to listen it, not really impressed, I mean it looks like they forced his sound to sound like oldschool but failed in the half, it feels...forced....sounds like a blend of master of puppets, st.anger, load and the black album, with touches of ...and justice for all, but it fails to have any of the particular sound of any of those albums, songs are too long for my taste, none of them are less than 6 minutes!!, and the instrumental song...what's that for?? I mena is a boring instrumental,  none innovation, boring, lack of feeling, I give this album a 6/10 just because is a poorely return to his former glory and because it is the best Metallica has gave us all in years, this is a no shame nor glory return, maybe for the next album.

I know I have posted this in other theme but i feel I have to do it here too:

I want  to make things clear, I adore Judas Priest, I live for Judas,  I even constantly sware over the symbolic image of Rob leather pants or studed leather jacket(I actually do!), but.......but I really don't like this album, and I think that being a Judas Priest  doesn't mean that i should be bland at the hour of critisize his work, or praise every new album they get out like is a new painkiller or stained class,  so  this is it: this is not a good Judas Priest album, why?? lets see, Rob: great vocals, Glen and KK: awesome guitar player, Ian hill: he do a good work, Scott Travis: excellent drums man, so why this is a bad album?? because almost 90% of the song are midpaced, kinda low tune, a profuse use of synth(cut it out!), I mean a little is right but for godsake this is Judas Priest!! heavy metal in its purest form!! and I wanted like that, this album have a bland sound and not Priest sound,  it haves its moments(War, Visions, etc) but  I think this is the "hey  guys!  lets make  experimental/conceptual music just for the fun" album, this should be a one disc album, cause were many fillers songs this time, what amaze coming from a band like Priest.

I think this was unavoidable, they have to make and experimental album so they could grow musically and see what it fits really with Judas Priest music and style, I give this album a 6.5 on a 10 scale, and believes me, it hurts me to gave that pointage, I only hope next album would be better.

So this is it, now you can stone me to death for been a Judas Priest heretic,  but at least I know that I feel better(or worse, depend how you see it) for writting these here...this is my katarsis.

It should be, cause bands like Bathory, Venom, Death, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Sarcofago,Sepultura, Morbid Angel, etc would never be in a Rock Hall of Fame, but they deserve recognition because of their contribution to the Heavy Metal genre, that is a musical genre with a lot of adepts and history.

Thanks,J.D., I really love my PFH t-shirt, one of the really few things I love from my country, quality metal bands t-shirts, the guy who sells to me its a friend of my, and I have another friend who made me a D.R.I and a Violator r-shirts. Wow!!, 15?that's awesome, I wish I could listen that abum at that age, 1985 indeed is a great year for metal, I just bough that The Force Vynil, the last year, I was 19, personally I like better the "The Force" album, in PFH sound a little Venom worship(believe me, its nothing wrong with that haha), I think they found his true sound in "The Force", Metal Forces and Flame of The Antichrist rocks!!Onslaught owns!!, so what do yu think about the Killing Peace album?? I think its a little modern thrash, but its kinda ok...I think.
