I am curious to see what Eddie looks like, if they still bring him out onstage. I know they did for SBIT tour but not sure about the previous tours since I did not get a chance to see them. Oh yeah and I forgot that one of the female vocalists, Jill Goia, was featured on Rockstar Supernova a few years back. They also have some fans of Savatage playing in TSO as well as Alex Skolnick. |

You are partly correct ,TSO was nnot necessarily a tribute to Criss (HUGE TALENT LOST RIP). Under the direction of Paul O'Niell Savatage started experimenting with use of orchestra starting with Hall of the Mountain King and Gutter Ballet. After Criss was tragically killed by a drunk driver Savatage was at a crossroads. Jon Oliva was basically in the band in the studio but there was no guitar player. Atlantic wanted to known guitar player in the band instead of an unknown, enter Alex Skolnick. Jon Oliva returned the band full time for Handful of Rain which saw the band start to experiment a little more with counterpoint vocals and such. The next release Dead Winter Dead, a concept album about the Bonia war, which also brought back Chris Caffery on guitar. On this album there was the Christmas Eve 12/24 track which a Tampa DJ started to play around Christmas time and the phone blew up wanting to know the name of the band and the song. With the popularity of the song it gave Paul the idea to establish a new group to differentiate it from the Savatage history and explore other avenues. I am really getting over the Christmas thing but Beethoven's Last Night and Night Castle are fantastic. There was supposed to be a stage production of Beethoven's Last night which never happened for some reason. It is interesting going to a TSO show and seeing the difference in who the Savatage fans are and who are there strictly for TSO. This information is all from memory from conversations I have had with Paul O'Niell and Jon Oliva (both guys are superfantastically nice) over the years at shows and may be a bit blurry. To those who don't know, the Trans-siberian orchestra rose out of the ashes of SAVATAGE, after the death of their lead guitarist chis olivia, they began it as a tribute to him and his love of orchestrated and technical music.
The album i bought is Night Castle, to those who have never heard the TSO, this is a great album and i highly recommend it. Favourties so far are, "Sparks", The mountian(the original moutain king song) "Night Castle" , "another way you can die" and thats just the first album.(2 disk) my favourtie song on the album is EPIPHANY though, WOW awesome song, warning starts out really slow, kinda below average song until almost exactly half way through, after you hear the word COLISEUM! it fucking rocks!!
Some may complain(hardcores for the death metal and grindcore shit) that this isnt their kind of music, but i honestly love it, it broadens Metal to a much wider audience without making it awful. Some of the most talented music ive ever heard. Something for everyone in this with 5-7 different singers including an extremly talented girl vocalist who sings one of my favourites"father son and holy ghost" To the doubters, Ex- Megadeth guitar player Al petralli ( i cant spell with shit!!) rocks on this album.

JD, thanks for respecting my opinion (a rarity on message boards). I honestly do not know why I prefer one to the other, certain aspects strike me differently at different times. To me, it felt like Priest were trying to play to the masses with both Turbo (glam-ish) and Ram It Down (faster music). I think all of the older metal guys were in the same situation of trying to figure where they fit in with the 80's metal scene, just look at how high Ozzy's hair was teased on the Ultimate Sin record and tour. I think they tried some new things and some worked, some did not. I still love the Turbo Lover Hi Octane mix, but I also like a lot of dance music from the 80's (go figure). But to each his own.
Ram It Down while being not one of Priest's better albums is light years better quality than Turbo. | | ProwlerCub wrote: | | I actually like Turbo because there are some catchy songs on there. Of course I do have a problem with grown men singning about not needing Parental Guidance. I can see where it is considered a bit of a sell-out album because of the sound and the look the band went for at the time. IMO it is a lot better than the Ram It Down album (save Blood Red Skies). |

The only arena shows I have seen this year have been Maiden and Priest. We have passes to Universal Studios who do a Mardi Gras concert series every year and this year we saw The Village People (horrible), Kelly Clarkson (great), Pat Benatar (phenomenal) and KC and the Sunshine Band (beyond horrible). |

Ok just looking to get some interesting dialogue started about what do you feel makes a song classic or timeless? Is it vocals? Melodies? Solos? Lyrics? Let's discuss. |

I agree with you HB, guess I should have stated that. Much like anything else, decisions are made given the information available at the time to try to solve a problem. Whether they are good or bad cannot be seen for at least a few years. All that can really be done is hope in the long run the decisions made will be for the positive instead of the negative. Politics is such a touchy subject but always a good point for discussion as long as people are open-minded about it. Edited at: Tuesday, September 08, 2009 1:05:37 PM |

Since I work in insurance I am interested in seeing how the whole healthcare reform works out. Luckily I have a heavy claims background so I can go back to that if necessary. I feel Obama came into such a huge mess that it is going to take a while to see how effective he is. |

There is some great dialogue going on here and that is why I really like message boards. Someone mentioned promotion, there is not shit done for promotion in Florida (except for things like Britney or Coldplay as someone mentioned). I do find it funny that the rock stations will show up at these shows acting like they support whatever band but when you ask them about the band's latest release they look like you asked them to solve a physics problem. I have only been to Europe in the Navy back in the 90's and I remember going into the records stores and finding bands that I did not know were still around (for me it was Helloween at the time) and were making new music. We stopped in Malta one time and missed Maiden by a few weeks. I would love to hit a European show just to see the difference in the crowds.
I also did not realize it was so difficult to get around Eurpoe. Thanks for enlightening me. |

Good point Ron. Could it also be possible that the US focuses on the money-making trends instead of longevity. Remember when MTV and VH1 used to play videos instead of shows. Now we have VH1 Classic and MTV2 that are playing the videos. It seems to me that in the states music is treated as disposable these days. |

I was watching That Metal Show the other day and they had a special from the Download Festival. It seemed to me that there seems to be a greater outlet for metal bands overseas than there is in the US. I am not talking about the intensity of the fans but a greater chance for exposure of bands overseas. Why is it that some bands can play larger venues overseas but come to the US and have to play clubs (if they even tour the US at all)? Thoughts? Comments? |

Finally someone agrees with me. The set was way too short for missing a band from the bill. Maybe Rob should start working with Bruce Dickinson on working the stage or wear a bit less leather. Did you feel there was very little interaction with the crowd? It seemed to me it was just going thru the motions with song, song, song, oxygen break, song, song, etc. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by tshoffie from Sunday, August 16, 2009 11:06:35 PM) | | tshoffie wrote: | | After seeing priest tonight in Tampa i am starting to think that maybe they should get Ripper back, i had no problem with his vocals in fact i think he was very good...Rob tonight seemed very very slow kept his head down all the time when he was singing as if he was reading from a teleprompter..he just didnt seem to have any energy at all..the rest of the band however were like they always have been...also it didnt help that the setlist was very dissappointing as well |

Paying almost $100 for a ticket to see 3 bands and Priest doing the regular set after Whitesnake had to cancel the rest of the tour. It would have been a good opportunity for a worthy local band or some other band. Good to see that greed (promoter or otherwise) is still alive and well. I could have spent that money to see Robin Williams or Rent. Edited at: Monday, August 17, 2009 6:42:13 PM |
