Becks I think you'll find the correct pronounciation of Taupo is Too Poor. ( Source: The weather report on 3 News ). They named it this because about 95% of the population are too poor to live there and have to be content with stopping for a sausage roll there on the way to Auckland.
So here's some pics from our long weekend away. We drove to Auckland (NZs biggest city) through the middle of the North Island
Here's Mt Ruapehu (Roo-a-pay-hoo), one of NZs many volcanoes (last erupted in the early-mid 90's, I remember watching it from afar as a kid)
And Mt Ngarahoe (cone shaped one) (naa-ra-hoe-ee) and Mt Tongariro (rugged flat type one to the right) (tong-a-reer-o) - these two are right next to Ruapehu and Tongariro is where Mordor was set for the Lord of The Rings movies.
Here's Lake Taupo (tow-paw, proper Maori pronounciation, or an attempt at writing it at least lol) - a great big lake in the middle of the North Island that was created by a giant volcanic explosion many many years ago.
Auckland city centre from a boat we went on a harbour cruise in, the tall spiky building is the Sky Tower
Me on Rangitoto (rang-ee-toe-toe) Island - another result of volcanic activity. There is no soil on this island but the trees grow awesomely on the volcanic rock.
Going underneath Auckland harbour bridge on the boat
Rangitoto Island in the background, the north shore part of Auckland in front of that, from the viewing deck of the sky tower - I nearly pooped myself lol not a big fan of heights
The beach at Devonport, a suburb of the North Shore area that we had a nosey around
That is so fuckin' cool JJ!!! I hear Ripper is a really nice guy - very cool and down to earth. Glad you had a kick ass time

Highlights in the set for me were Victim Of Changes, Scream Machine, Heart Of A Killer, Grinder, Stand Up And Shout and Heaven And Hell. Also Ripper does an awesome rendition of Painkiller. I ended up filming some of the gig for the band for which they gave me cds of Jugulator, Demolition, 98 Live Meltdown and a gig poster, all of which Ripper signed which was wicked.

So Ripper Owens is playing in Wellington this Friday and on Monday my friend texts me saying I have a job that you might be very interested in. I rang him up and he is friends with the promoter of the show and he needs someone to drive Ripper and his band around while they are here. Said I was interested and the promoter got in touch with me today with the itinerary. So at lunch time on Friday I'm picking Ripper Owens and his band up at the airport and driving them around for 24 hours. Pretty sweet deal, free tix to the show, hang with the band. Can't wait.

Volbeat are awesome man. They are from Denmark and are huge over in Europe. Kind of like rock n roll with a heavy metal twist. Anselmo is one of the best vocalists in metal I think.
Yeah, Why not though? I'm not a huge Limp Bizkit fan, and their lyrics are stupid, but they are heavy as fuck when they want to be and I like to keep the show diverse. You're actually the second person whose said it was good to hear them so I'm pretty happy about that. Cheers Bud.
Should I mention that I thought I was the only one here who would listen to them.
I think Wes Borland is one of the best guitarists out there. I saw them at Rock on the Range
two summers ago and loved them. Even though it will get me laughed at here()
I think they are one of the heaviest "live" bands and the new album isn't bad either.

Cheers Necro, agree with you there on Triptykon, they are definately on another level from all the other bands out there. Electric Wizard are probably the ultimate doomy, sludgy, stoner metal band around, cool band I reckon. FOTN I'd never heard of until recently when I read an interview with the main bloke so thought I'd give them a listen. From what I read their live shows are quite an event.....What did you think of them??
I will try and play that Mortiis song for you in the next couple of weeks.
Some good tunes there! Triptykon are the next level of 'heavy' & Electric Wizard can seriously damage ur mind...lol. Fields Of The Nephilim....omg..saw them live back in the day...i'd have followed that with Mortiis - Parasite God...just differing levels of what we call 'rock'.

Pissing me off (apart from taxes?) the damn visa charge and all the hoops you have to jump through to go to Brazil!!! $160USD plus pictures (expensive passport one, of course), bank statements from the previous three months, paid return express postage, letter explaining why you are there, etc?!? WTF!!!!!
I know that it is just them getting back at the USA that makes them do the same thing but, DAMN. If I declared Mexican status, I'd only have to pay $30.
Racism. Pure racism. Worse? Only good for three months. I have to jump these hoops every fucking trip.
I'll spare you guys the reviews or at least keep them to a minimum.
I enjoyed last night.

Huh. While interesting and I am glad that you are in a location that allows you to see so many bands, I cannot help but say that I don't know if I'd pay to see too many of them. Rob Zombie (perhaps), Anthrax (I have seen a bunch of times and never thought that they were more than a warmup / over-hyped cover band...Scott Ian playing this one?), Megadeth (I have seen numerous times and can't say that I like their / his? new material...after all, one man show), Motorhead (again, seen countless times...always solid and good) and Slayer (again, seen countless times and they don't inspire me). Certainly nothing new.
The rest? Well, glad that you want and are able to see them. Call me old. We'll leave it at that. Were they in my backyard, my opinion might change. No matter what, I still await your reviews. Cheers. (Quoting Message by Budred from Monday, April 16, 2012 6:22:02 PM)

I didn't say the show you were at was bad. Or that he didn't produce a great performance at that show. What I'm getting at is that overall, both live and album wise, the band is on the decline. Some of those who have seen the band many times agree. Age is part of it but I really think the band are together for the money more than anything else these days. If a new album comes out this year I could be proven wrong but I can't see them releasing anything groundbreaking or exceptional. Some fans love AOR, I think it's ok but far from their best. Nostra we all pretty much agree is rubbish. The track record since the reunion is patchy. KK is gone, crowds are waning. I just reckon it's time for this band to call it a day. I would hate to see them fizzle out.
My show isn't an internet radio show. It is broadcast over the air in our area. The show just goes on the station website so that anyone whose interested outside our area can check it out. Being that there's metal fans on this site I thought posting a link might be a good idea so some of them could listen if they wanted to. Do you think I should stop posting links and setlists from each show? Or maybe stop doing the show entirely? Now which is it, JJ? First you rip on Vail because she is apparently too young to have any sort of valid judgement when she says that she really liked a show or two. Then, when some of us "old folks" who have seen Priest MANY more times than you call bullshit on your comments for a concert you haven't even seen, you claim that we are also wrong. WTF?! Do I need to have an internet radio show once a week to say what I like and what I don't? Sorry, I was only the host of a real metal radio show back in the 90s. Too old to count in your book, I guess.
HRMG said it perfectly well. I have given up entire summer vacations to following Priest and, like any band, they have good nights and bad ones. Wish I had the interview at hand when Rob says that he tries to give it his all at every show but that, sometimes, his vocal chords didn't permit. KK said the same when he commented on some of his ad-libs. Sometimes they work and sometimes the whole band rolls their eyes at him. All we (or, I, at least) have said was that HAMMOND was a killer show! Sold-out crowd to interact with a magical and spot-on performance. While I was also in Detroit, I agree that Hammond was the one that should have been recorded. It was pure magic. I cannot and DO not claim the same for even the Montreal, Detroit, Nashville shows last time around.
Keep on promoting your radio show, buddy. Listing tracks and talking smack about what you haven't experienced seems to be your forté.

You left me out of that statement, JJ. I have been around and watching Priest / Halford since JD and Bud and I couldn't disagree more. The Priest concert in Hammond, IL (Chicago) was one of the most earth-shaking performances of any band I have seen. Halford claims to have given up smoking and I say that he has never been stronger. Only thing close was Painkiller Tour, IMO. Adding Richie to the mix, while not KK, was a genuine treat.
"Energetic" is a subjective term but, damn, were they on top of their game in Hammond. "Halford can hardly walk" is WAY off the mark. IMHO, at least. I just hope some bootleg will surface from that show to help prove the point.
jimmyjames wrote:

Ask guys like JD and Budred who saw them in the 80s when they were at their peak and they'll tell you that this band is in decline and anyone who tells you Halfords voice is as good as ever is just lying. His high vocals are completely shot to hell. He doesn't scream any more, he screeches. And if you call Priests performance "energetic" then I'd hate to see a band who you thought were lethargic. Halford can hardly walk now, hobbling around, hunched over the mike trying to read the teleprompter and screeching two cats stapled together. They've got nothing left. They were once my favourite band but over the last few years I just can't be bothered.

I do agree with JD in that JP is misusing their time somewhat, as they could've done a new album first and then do their final tour. However, I don't agree with JJ nor Budred about the live performances. Judas Priest have been nothing short of incredible as far as live acts go. Nobody that I've seen live so far has delivered a performance as energetic, aesthetically pleasing, professional, and complex as JP has. In fact, I wish they could continue touring even if Rob ends up in a wheelchair. At least it would be decorated with spikes and skulls and shoot flames from the back. Plus they have Richie now. New blood=new ideas=higher possibility of a kickass album.

Bollocks. The band has descended into irrelevance. The only people keen to hear what they come up with next are the core dozen or so people who regularly post on this site. The rest of the audience are just keen to hear the same old set they've been cranking out since 82. They are, I'm sad to say, a nostalgia act now and one that can't fill arenas at that. This is not a band at the top otf their game. Being able to play your set competently doesn't mean your at the top of your game. You would hope after 30 years they could do that with there eyes closed. When a band is at the top they are generating excitement among the fans. This band does not do that any more. They are trying to scrape every last cent out of it before they have to start wheeling the Metal God out there in a wheelchair.
they may not be selling out stadiums but they are totaly on their game this tour.

I have no doubt there will be a live album and dvd from this tour. Not that anyone will care or purchase it. They need to put out lives from the Painkiller and DOTF tours and also release the SFV one as a CD. No-one gives a shit now. What's the point of keeping for posterity performances from when you are well past your peak and unable to fill arenas and denying your fans performances from when you are at the top of your game? Weird.

like K.K. and Glenn's intro to the song "Hellrider" from 2005's Angel Of Retribution. I highly doubt K.K. or Glenn have heard this album before so its a coincidence but wierd.

I haven't heard much of them. Get the impression that they are one of the new breed of metal bands that are more style than substance with designer tatts and $300 haircuts, average musicianship, cliched songs etc. Could be wrong though, but as far as new stuff goes the best of it is coming from the underground scene. Most of these young mainstream metal acts are shit I think. I feel the same about Avenged Sevenfold, Bring Me The Horizon, Rise To Remain etc.
Well, you're entitled to that opinion and it's probably shared by many here. Some of their stuff
is a little weak but some of it isn't that bad. I like songs like "Pain", "Riot", "The Good Life", and
a few others. They should have been tolerable at worst. Their singer ruined any chance of that.
I respect your opinion when it comes to music. Even though it won't change the way I feel about them
tell me what you think of Bullet For My Valentine. I only got into these guys last year after seeing them
at Rock On The Range. Now, after seeing them 3 times I'm starting to love these guys. They are so
much better than I realized. Your thoughts?

Bullshit, the reason the band is fucked up now is because they've never stuck to their guns and because they don't actually like each other and are doing this, not because Priest still have things to prove or say, but because it is a business arrangement that is mutually beneficial to all parties concerned. They can all make more money as "Priest" than they can apart. Seriously, the Halford band is releasing shit and would be lucky to fill medium size clubs were it to tour alone, Glenn Tipton's solo album is abysmal and only sold 11 copies worldwide and Ian Hill hasn't written a song in over 30 years.
lol Jimmy...."K.K." could be the reason the band is fucked up now as his Nostradamus ideas ( and yes K.K. started the Nostradamus project /ideas ) are the reason the band started to degenerate into a farce,if he would of shut his ego mouth and just followed Rob and Glenn into another normal metal album instead of dreaming up Nostradamus the band would of had a british metal album out already,Rob and Glenn realized that ending a career on Nostradamus seemed wrong....unlike "K.K.'' who was absolutely fine with that being the last Judas Priest album.....go figure....just my guess from what I know....
They were forced into a British Steel reunion tour because Ken didn't want to make another album and was still in the band and the management did not want to tour the nostradamus album like K.K. wanted to because it would not sell,so there ya go...but I do agree that the band & management are rehashing these lame compilation albums/live/best of.....it is a joke so I do agree with that. Now go figure....K.K. is out of the band and Rob and Glenn want to do a normal british heavy metal album again.....its sad to say but I believe K.K. was the entire downfall of Judas Priest starting in 2006 when the Retribution tour was over and when he started to create Nostradamus.
How could K.K. let Nostradamus be the last album in a "heavy metal "band's career? It just doesn't make any sense at all.....I'm glad Rob and Glenn are making at least one more album to top Nostradamus from being the last LP,no matter how good or bad it is it will definately be better than the shitty Nostralullaby album.

This band is done. It's all descended into a joke. Honestly, the reality is this band are a joke now. Just a bunch of over the hill rip off merchants. I can't believe people on this site bag Maiden and stick up for these guys who haven't done anything decent since 1990. Yeah I'm sure the band have nothing to do with this, it's all management, Yeah right. I reckon KK left because he'd had a gutsful of this kind of shit. I think the real story is that they agreed to do a farewell tour and end it, the others welched and said "We want to do another shitty album and flog this dead horse some more" and he said "In that case I'm leaving because I don't want to see the band I started degenerate into a farce". Which it has.
And despite what everyone on this site seems to think, Rob has lost it. He just sounds screechy and irritating now.

Looking forward to seeing those pics when you get a chance. I couldn't think of Pizarro's name before, cheers for jogging the memory. I lived over there for a couple of years to too, loved it. Sometimes wish I'd never left.
Nice about your pop. I lived in Spain for a number of years (Salamanca) and work still takes me all around the country regularly. Costa del Sol / Málaga / Torremolinos up to Pamplona / Logroño usually. I was there when ETA declared their last "cease fire" and, luckily, just missed the bombings of the train stations in Madrid that essentially ousted Aznar from an almost certain re-election. I was still in country but had gone to Toledo for the week.
I'll have to remember this thread. I just missed being blown across the street by the bombings of a British Airlines office in downtown Madrid. My first thought? Grab my Kodak instamatic camera and snap some shots! I have two plus the newspaper clipping as it hit the international news quickly. Amazingly so as it was pre-cable.
BTW, PIZARRO was the true badass in the Conquest. When he takes the Inca, they knew he was coming.
jimmyjames wrote:

I would like to see that photo. While I was there you would hear about a car being blown up in Madrid or something quite regularly on the news. It's pretty terrible to have that going on in such a great country. My dad is actually on holiday over there at the moment.

HAAA!! Hey, now. What about their Civil Wars? They fought them (and, as some would argue, are STILL fighting them) for decades if not centuries! One even ended with the beautiful (he says jokingly) union of the Catholic Monarchs that finally united Castilla-León with their arch enemies in Aragón. How about the Basque Separatists? The vasquense have been bombing the hell out of the federalist government for eons. I was almost blown up in one of their damn attacks (I have great photos of that one!).
Kidding aside, the Spanish Armada was the dominant maritime force throughout the 15th and into the 16th centuries. Only true rival was Portugal at the time which, of course, was already part of Iberian Peninsula. In all my travels, I don't bump into many English-speakers in Central or South America. Carlos V (I) was both the King of Spain and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. As they say "during his reign, the sun never set on his empire." Clearly the first world Empire. Not too many Romans made it across the sea.
Fickle finger of fate did hit them but it was also accompanied by hyperinflation and huge debt at home. Kinda sounds like the USA. Still, your comment makes me think of the greay Sargent Hartman (R. Lee Ermey - woo hoo!) from Full Metal Jacket and his tirade at Private "Gomer Pile."
To paraphrase: "If God had wanted you up here (on this obstacle), he would have MIRACLED your ass up here by now!" lol Same could apply to the famous Armada Invencible Española....except that Private Pile had a better commander!
jimmyjames wrote:
And the fact that when it comes to war the Spanish are bloody hopeless. Of the 8 or 9 wars they've been involved in in Europe they've lost them all. So I would say regardless of the weather the English would have snotted the Spanish in that one, vastly superior armada or not. Maybe God just stepped in so the inevitable Spanish defeat wouldn't be quite so embarrassing for them.

I gotta poke my head in here on this one. You DO realize that most historians attribute the massive storms that hit the Spanish Armada to be their downfall, right? It was, by no means, a vastly superior English Naval force nor simply Sir Francis Drake and some amazing English naval strategy.
Blame Poseidon or blame the fact that God was on the side of the Protestants and unleashed a massive storm on them. Fact is, Drake had very little to do with it.

A tradition of colonialism can lead to interesting assimilation of diverse cultural influences. The foundation of British rock and pop was greatly influenced by visceral and intellectual American black culture...blues and jazz. I've also frequently thought Billy Idol represented British seapower without a war. Any student of history knows the Limeys are nucking futs...Sir Francis Drake and the English Navy defeating the vastly superior Spanish Armada comes to mind.
