I don't know about your end of the world, but calling a German a Krout is not very nice. So, I agree it is offensive, just like calling Jewish people certain names, and Mexicans certain names, and the list could go on, but it's just seen as derogatory and ignorant.
Kraut? That's not offensive. It comes from sauerkraut. Which means sour cabbage. I hardly think calling someone a cabbage is going to offend them. You've said millions of things much more abusive and offensive than that.
