[Deep Freeze] Monday, June 23, 2008 12:09:23 PM
To All a most glorious Monday morning. I woke this day to the very sad news that I see has been mentioned in another post; George Carlin has passed.

Anyone that actually reads any of my prose will clearly see the tremendous influence Carlin has had on me and my life. His inspiration has helped mold much of how I see this world. I cannot begin to tell you what a profound effect his death will have on my life.

Carlin saw things in a very special and unique way. For example; his thoughts on religion, while certainly much darker than mine, are a measure for me and my opinion on a "god" or deity. I have used his words, or at least his thought-pattern in this area many, many times.

I feel a great, personal loss. Carlin was a master of words and a genius not only in comedy but in grammar and proper English. One need only spend some time reading any one of his many books (of which I own all!) to see that this man knew the English language better than most. Certainly far better than me!

I realize this is a Priest site and I do hope that each of you will bear with me as this man meant so much to me, I feel as though I have lost someone very dear even though we never met.

We all grieve in our own way. I have shared much of myself with you and , at this most sad and difficult time, I come to you for the comfort I have found in the past. If you were not a fan of George Carlin, I can accept that....but I do not understand it. He was larger than life. He was a master. He was incredible. I will miss him more than words can say.

Hi ya Valiant!!     And to the entirety of our hallowed, inner sanctum better known as the  Judas Priest Noticeboard,   I bid you all a fond greeting to this particular Monday afternoon....hope today has gone better for you all than it has for me thus far... ....detours suck monkey-nuts...and it makes travel 'round here utter HELL...

....'tis why I tell people that  'Ithaca'   really means  'detour.'     It doesn't really...it's Indian for something far more earthly and innocent than that....but...it may as WELL mean  'detour...'   'cuz every summer, that's what happens.    The city and county decide to band together and tear the bejeezuz outta every street, bridge, and thoroughfare that we transit drivers rely on heavily to get our ridership to and from places...LOL!!

I dunno...I guess SOMETHING has to come about to make up for the lack of ridership...what with 90% of the student body enjoying their summer breaks from either of the two campuses here.

Glen did not look good with a stash and neither did KK.  That last photo is more pants orientated.

And then Glenn Tipton was hired by the band right before creating their first album, Rocka Rolla.

[Tephra Rising] Sunday, June 22, 2008 7:55:13 PM
Very likely.  I am pretty sure that from what I've read Priest was a 4-piece from 1971 to 1973 consisting of Atkins, Campbell, Ian and KK.  As I understand it, in '73 Atkins and Campbell left and that's when KK and Ian brought in Rob and John Hinch (drummer) from the band Hiroshima.
[Vaillant 3.0] Sunday, June 22, 2008 7:53:31 PM
I don't know. I saw that one early pic of JP before Rob, and it said that the black guy was Al. It must have been mislabeled or something.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Tephra Rising from Sunday, June 22, 2008 7:50:46 PM)

PROGRAMMING CHANGE:  As much as I love the new JP, I had to put in Godsmack IV just for a change of pace.  No offense, everybody.
[Tephra Rising] Sunday, June 22, 2008 7:50:46 PM
Are you sure you aren't confusing him with Chris Campbell who was JP's drummer from 1970-73 or thereabouts?  He actually WAS black and had a 'fro.  Early pics of Atkins that I've seen just have him with long dark hair and a beard.
[Vaillant 3.0] Sunday, June 22, 2008 7:49:09 PM

True.

Now, about Al Atkins: I used to think he was black (since he had the afro back in the day with Priest), but after seeing that pic of him in the autobiography thread, I was taken aback. Heh....never judge a book by its cover....right?

Same here........other than being on the net, did a little work and then got out of the house, drove into Bend (about 15 miles) went to Barnes and Noble and of course cried like a girl when I was told I'd have to wait on Al Atkins' spectacular new biography (NOT).   Other than that today has been pretty quiet.  Am missing my little boy who I have not seen in about 3 weeks now.  Summers are rough for me because he's off with his mom.  Long story.

I'm a writer ( actually studying Journalim this year and next year) so I get excited when people speak about stuff they've written (lol)  Selling 200 copies is quite an achievement! I see your point though about wanting to keep it 100% in your control though, editors can be brutal!

Well.. it's 11 pm here now so I best be off now. Thanks for the chat, you're a very interesting person to talk to.

My book is self-published.  I did look into getting an ISBN number which is a national registry code to get wider distribution, but felt like that it would become too corporate.  This was something I wanted to have 100% say in how it got produced, distributed, etc.  To be honest, it's pretty much a local topic and I am not sure that it would do all that well outside of Central Oregon.  I have managed to sell around 200 copies which is about 199 more than I imagined I would ever sell, so I think I've done all right with it.  The book itself is only about 40 pages long but makes a nice evening read with a beer, glass of wine, whatever.
[joedraper] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:50:56 PM
Wow! that is increadible! I find volcanoes really interesting too. I watch as many documentaries on them as I can, considering the closest volcano I could get to is in Namibia so national geographic will have to do for me. I think to have witnessed Mount St Helens go up... speechless. An experience that will stay with you forever I'll bet.

Have you approached a publisher about getting your book more widely distributed?

Most of the time the summers are pretty hot (it's desert, remember).  The Cascades shield us from most of the rain that comes in from the Pacific.  Last July 4th it got up to 103 here so yes, it does get pretty toasty.  Another benefit of living here is that when it does get too hot you can escape up in the mountains where it's cooler.  Also we don't have the humidity either so that makes it nice.

Listen, I have been sitting at this computer all day so I think I am going to get outside for a little bit.  I'll talk to you in a while, OK?
[spapad] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:47:18 PM

Ooops, forgot. I am from a bodaciously small town called Bluefield, VA. There is also a Bluefield, WV which is now almost empty since "King Coal" does not work out so well for the area anymore. The business is still booming but with automated systems being in place there are less jobs. The railroad is a good job if you can stomach being called out at anytime of day or night. I used to date an engineer for years and he seemed like the crabbiest person in the world sometimes.

[Tephra Rising] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:40:47 PM

Yeah, if I had to claim two religions one would be Judas Priest heavy metal and the other would be climbing volcanoes.  The Cascades have about a dozen smoking guns that run in a north-south line from the Canadian border down through Washington State and Oregon and into Northern California. I have climbed about half of them.  Mount Saint Helens is the most famous of these, erupted in 1980.  I got to watch it go off which was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.

My favorite peak to climb is South Sister (of a closely-knit group called the Three Sisters) which I climb at least once every summer.  Even wrote a short, handwritten book about it which got some local interest.

[joedraper] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:36:49 PM

We do indeed have Lesotho surrounded! lol another very beautiful place should you ever get to see it.

However, sound like you live in paradise!  I hear what you're saying about the wrong kinds of people moving into the area, that can really put a bummer on things. Don't give up on owning your own house there one day, I believe everything is possible eventually. We've also got horrific housing prices too at the moment but our housing market is about to collapse and housing will become cheaper pretty soon from now. \

Are you really a mountain climber? That is so cool!! I'm more into hiking, we never had anything major to climb nearby but we've got some killer hiking trails around
.

Across the border in WV there is an entire county (pretty much) filled with crackheads. Anytime someone says they are from the "County" you know what county they mean. I have never even drove to that county and it is only about 40 minutes away. I just don't want to see it at all. I'm actually proud I have never been there.
