Good point. I also agree that this album is FAR from the "downfall." I'll not post here anymore either. Let this thread die, I say.
My vote is for "what do you think." [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by tasnam1 from Sunday, July 27, 2008 9:59:46 AM) | | tasnam1 wrote: | | There are three threads that are discussing the same topic about the new album.

I propose merging them into one.
I do not believe "The downfall of Priest" is an accurate thread in ANY way since I don't believe it will be even close to their downfall.
I would love to continue this discussion but I am tired of jumping to each of these threads and posting (and reading) the discussion in tandom.
I will stop posting on the "down fall thread" - but which topic should we continue on?

In all honesty, I cannot blindly say that the fans posting before me (and I have NO doubt of their loyalty to the Almighty Priest) do not hit a chord with their comments ... pun intended. I pondered similar thoughts in the 80s, 90s, and now.
Now I don't think anyone posting on the site here that is worth their salt as a fan could argue that Priest isn't the greatest Metal band on this earth. Hell, I LIVE for Priest and am thinking of driving 20+ hours in two consecutive weeks to see them. Still, I have also questioned the decisions of the promotion team around them. Left me scratching my head more than banging it more than once in my life.
No doubt in my mind. This is the greatest band in the world, metal or otherwise. I do agree that they have been "mishandled." I am just really glad to have been one who "caught on" early and never let go. KISS has one on the market, I want a friggin' PRIEST coffin! Bury my JP guitars with me, all I ask... I love Priest but I don't understand and maybe never will why they put so much (blood, sweat, tears) in to an album then stick their collective heads in the sand when it comes to common sense marketing and promoting their own material. I sense a bit of arrogance on the part of the band when you listen to their interviews. I would says management has the only power of persuasion to know some sense in to JP and obviously they fell short.
My guess is an outside producer would have recommended shorter songer and a 12-14 track cd vs a 23 track filled with an overkill of slow intros. this is what happens when you don't work with quality outside people-you get tunnel vision- and hurt yourself. Motley Crue, Metalica etc have always had top producers and play their top songs during their concerts and what happens??????????? they have great cd sales! JP hasn't had a top producer since '90's Painkiller and never plays their best songs on tour... the cd sales or lack there of speak for themselves.
I love Priest but find myself scratching my head all the time at the stupid things they do. Look! of all songs to make a video of, they make a cartoon video of "war"??? VS 'Alone', 'Visons' or 'Nostradamus'-arguably their best song on the cd- (hello title track)- release "Visons" as a single but no video and no play during concerts??? Play 'death' over Nostradamus at concerts? Edited at: Saturday, July 26, 2008 11:27:01 PM |

Hey there. I made very similar comments to all of yours when AOR came out [ excluding references to Revolution which I adore, even if the vocal is a little strained in parts]. The War video is terrible, the song is passable but they would never play it live because arguably there are no real instruments on it. Sounds like keyboards , sequencers and a drum machine to me [ not that I care, just making the point]. Visions is a poppier sounding track, probably the best shot at getting some airplay. I agree Alone would have been a better single/video. The song is a clear winner, just scroll through these postings and its probably mentioned in 2 out of 3. The band would be wise to harness this interest/popularity and push the song to rock radio. It is a little long but they could do a radio edit. I also agree that they need to play at least one more song from the album in the setlist, and I also agree that they should substitute Death for Alone or Persecution, would also have preferred Nostrodamus to Prohecy. I wonder if this is all down to tuning and production reasons [ not to mention Robs desire for theatricality!]. I remember Ripper saying they could never do Cathedral Spires live due to the fact they tune their instruments to a certain level [ someone here will know what I mean!] Still hoping that by the Auckland show they will beef up the set maybe with LAM , Revolution or Deal with ... , and maybe one more Nostrodamus song, but not holding my breath [ and who cares anyway?] 42 sleeps to go ... don't break a leg guys! |

You and I don't know if was skimping on money.
It could have just been a "personal fulfillment goal" to produce their own album.
Regardless, when you have a critically accaimed project like PAINKILLER (that seems to get MORE respect as time goes on), wouldn't you repeat the same formula?
Perhaps they couldn't get along with Chris?
I remember an inteview on Behind the music with Def Leppard and they said they dreaded working with Mutt Lang - but they did it anyway and look at the sales result and quality result in the end.
Either way (regardless of producer - which is not my biggest beef here) what they "push" to the public is always "against the grain". They become their own worst enemy from a marketiing stand point.
I am a DIE HARD FAN. I will listen to everything and admire them and their work - they don't have to win ME over on each album.
I am rooting for them to be bigger, and to attract those that are on the fence or not even fans at all.
Sometimes THEY close that door themselves with their marketing ideas.
(These could be outside decisions - perhaps out of their control - I don't know)

I completely get and agree with your assesment about change in management. you would think the things we talk about would be common sense.
1. why release "visions" as a single but no video? don't play it on tour? Why a half ass video like "war" vs quality production of Nostradamus?
2.JP released "worth fighting for from AOR but never played it on tour except in Japan.
3. why skimp with money and produce the record yourself vs having a quality ourtside producer. Tom Allmon, Chris T- after that down hill and down in sales
4. why only play 1 intro and 2 ok songs (current tour) from Nos. vs playing 5 + of the cd's strong songs? Their actions say they're afraid of what the crowd wants.
5. you release a single but don't play it-so people don't request it on the radio?
6. start the Nostradamus internet promo with title song but don't play it live. that's one of their best songs! They should have that as the OPENER to the show! that would grab the audience much better than "dawn of creation"
7. drop "Death" and play "ALONE" which is 10x a better song.
To sump it up, in some ways they've taken great chances musically and made fantastic songs then fplay safe and fuck up on the basics of promoting.. I can't imagine how JP is expecting future success with a 'full Nostradamus concert' when they blow the current tour opportunity to pump the audience up for the cd by only playing 1 intro and 2 ok songs from the new cd? Jaydee,
You are correct on much of your post. I am a die hard fan would love to see them bigger and more popular then they are/have been.
Some things they do make me scratch my head.
I don't know if it is their marketing company (like Jayne Andrews)? or them personally.
From my understanding they have been with her/marketing manager for years.
There sometimes(not always) is some benefit in swtiching "vendors" from time to time to get a fresh perspective on your business. (Painkiller producer speaks for itself)
And remember this is a business.
I know most people don't want to think that way since it takes some fun emotion out of it, but if you have seen interviews from any rock band or performer, they will always tell you in interviews at some point you have to 'grow up'{paraphrased} and treat it like a business.
Again, though some things they do make me scratch my head.
The singles they have always picked seem to be off the mark compared to other GREAT options on the albums - and this is an on going issue for them
(Revolution vs. Deal w/Devil or Demonizer)
(Not pushing RecklessOut in the Cold from Turbo)
(Pushing WAR to the MTV world (which the song is just ok "a 5/10" - the video sucks) vs. Alone or Persecution)
(Not releasing a second Video off Ram it Down - like Heavy Metal) (BTW - I like Johnny B. Goode, but it was not enough from the album)
(Don't go video vs. Desert Plains)
I could go on, but you get the idea.

I just saw the JP in Seattle and over all is was a awesome show! However I noticed some, what I would consider. errors in judgment on the part of the band that would affect the sales of Nostradamus.
First very few people know the band has a new cd because there's no radio support. JP only played 3 songs from the new cd and they weren't even the best songs. For example "death" should have been dropped and substituted for "percecution", nostradamus", "alone", & "visions". JP needs to play to the cd's strengths and let the crowd know which new songs are from Nostradamus. The whole night Rob never mentioned once that they had a new cd or talked about it with the crowd- just a Nostradamus banner. In the old days Rob always talked about the new cd and told the crowd what songs are from the new cd AND played all the GOOD songs, vs some of the "B" songs....
Just an observation but jp should deffinitely have the title track in the set list. Also if you have a video,"War", it would be a good idea to put that in the setlist and promote it... If you're going to have a full Nostradamus show-TOUR- then it's a good idea to 'prime the pump' on this tour with all the great new songs and not just a few ok songs. Well if they wrote it to be NEW- they have clearly never heard much other music. It's all been done before. (like by Andrew Llyod Webber)
Nostraboredus be a more apt title.
