(Las Vegas, NV) Metal music magazine Old Dude Rock caught up with Faithful Defenders vocalist Mike 'Deep Freeze' Berentsen and sat him down to discuss the forthcoming album, Forged Steel. Following are excerpts from that interview:
ODR: So, where are you guys on the new album?
DF: It's is coming along wonderfully. The vocal tracks are all but done. We need a few 'fillers' and some backing vocals but they are pretty much finished. The guitars are also just about completed. We have more than half the drum tracks done, too.
ODR: Is that pretty typical? I mean, do you guys usually do it that way?
DF: Oh yes. It is a bit of an arduous undertaking but it all comes together in the end. It is a lot more than just turning on a microphone and hitting 'record'! (chuckles)
ODR: Any idea when it will be released?
DF: We are still hoping for a end of January/first of February '09. That may be a bit ambitious given the holidays but we are hopeful!
ODR: From what we have heard so far, it sounds really good! How about you? Are you happy with it?
DF: I am more than happy. This album represents a bit of a maturation for us. The first album was just what one would expect, raw. That is why we called it Raw Steel. The songs were pretty straight forward, hard driving and simple. This time, we decided to step it up a bit, you know? Do something a bit more intricate. We are using Phil's (Metal Meltdown) considerable talents on production. We have taken some risks and done some layering as well as more production numbers and whatnot. Overall, it is a far superior recording and certainly better than anything we have done.
ODR: So that adds to the time it takes to complete then?
DF: Certainly! It has a lot more to it this time. Like I said, the songs on the first album were pretty straight forward.
ODR: You have a favorite song on the album?
DF: HAHAHA!! Well, I cannot really pick just one. Besides, I don't want to give away any surprises! I guess Eat me Alive is pretty cool. That one was done as a favor to a special fan! Once the album is released, I will try to pick my favorite!
ODR: There does not seem to be as much "hype" for this album as there was before. JP.com seems relatively quiet concerning it. Does that make a difference? Are you worried?
DF: Worried? No no! Not really. I mean, I was a bit disappointed but I have relaized that the membership has changed considerably over the past couple years. Besides, this is not a novelty anymore. I mean, we already showed what we are capable of doing on Raw Steel so don't believe there is as much interest from that standpoint. People seem to enjoy the songs and there is some interest. I don't think it is fair to expect what we saw the first time around.
ODR: Some have said that you guys should hang it up...that there is really no need to keep doing this. How do you respond?
DF: I have no response to that! Well, yes I do. We love what we do. We really enjoy making the music. I think we would do it regardless but I do not see it as though we are a bunch of old farts making noise. The music really speaks for itself. You can't please everyone. We try to do what the membership wants us to do. there will always be someone that does not care for it.
ODR: So you are saying you don't listen to the critics?
DF: HA!!! Oh yeah, I listen! I know that we cannot possibly appeal to everyone so we do not try, that's all. We have our fan base and they enjoy the music. That is really all we can ask.
ODR: Does that mean there is any thought to a THIRD album?
DF: WHOA there!! Hang on!! I never said that !! HA!!!!! Actually, we have not even considered such a thing! Let's get this second one out there and we will see!! HA!!!!

I have noticed we are not getting a lot of listens over on AP these days. Actually, that is probably a good thing since there are a few "artists" over there that can be rather vindictive and we could lose our songs. Better that we all hold on until the album is done.
MM is working diligently, when he can. There is always that pesky "work thing" that gets in the way...HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn "makin a livin"! I still believe we will be ready to release it by late January/ early February. |

| I have to say, I have been listening to the songs today and MM, you are just amazing! I have a "demo" CD of a few of the songs and so it is a bit easier for me to hear what you have done on the post-production side. Just remarkable. After having the opportunity to watch you work that confounded machine and then to hear what you have done, I am just humbled. What a great job! When the album is completely finished, I am going to be SO proud to have my name on it! |

There is a website called Tune Core. You post your music on there and they distribute it to Amazon, Itunes, ect ect. You collect a check if any of it sells. Thats what former NY Gov' Eliot Spitzers prostitue did and she made a hundred grand after that scandal broke!! My girlfriend had a relative that made 1500 off of one blues tune he posted and had someone wanting to use it for a movie!!!

| HA!!!!!!!!!!!!! I understand. Phil plans to sell our original work, just as any musical group would do. I believe he has a place that he can send it and try to sell it. I am not too familiar with the whole thing so I cannot give you details. He posted Judgement Day as a way of letting people hear what to expect, should they decide to purchase the songs. Perhaps it is on a "download" basis? I have no idea, my friend! Honestly, my work is very different from that song. In any event, you would have to PM Phil to get more information. |

Perhaps it is on a "download" basis? I have no idea, my friend! Honestly, my work is very different from that song. In any event, you would have to PM Phil to get more information. |

The more I think about it, the more I believe that it would be a far easier (and less hair-pulling) to track all of the orders via a well laid out spreadsheet. I guess my concern now is the shipping. I recall it was a rather daunting task on the last album! The Princess was going crazy with all we had to do! She swore we would never do it again and yet, here we are! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The last time we just had people send us the shipping cost and then we sent out the CD. Scorp, you are absolutely right! At no point did we ever even consider doing the songs exactly like Priest. We are not Priest! Further, I am not Rob!!! Since the very first album, we have tried to give the songs our "spin". Our "sound". You will note the subtleties in MM's guitars and, of course, my vocal changes in the songs. All of this is by design. We have always wanted to pay tribute to Priest, not be them. When you hear one of our songs, we want it to be easy to identify. That was our intent, anyway!
The songs MM has posted are just a taste of what is to come! The album will be full of little surprises and some very fine music. That is our promise to you. I am looking forward to the release! It is still far from completed, as we have told you. These darn things really do take a lot of time and work. MM and Thumper have more work to do next week AND we have Thanksgiving right smack dab in the middle of it all!! We all have families and time is very precious. Once the guys are done with the remaining tracks, we still have post production and whatnot. All very time consuming with the holidays added! I would not expect to see the album until well into the New Year.

It was the the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness... HA!!!!!!! And so begins my thoughts on the place wherein we now find ourselves, almost three years and almost two albums later. Such remarkable, unforgettable times. Such moments men dare not actually believe they could live! The epoch of belief I believe Dickens said. In any event, memories that will last a lifetime and all courtesy of a group of men that, sometime in the late 60's or ealry 70's decided to create a band called Judas Priest. My life certainly changed as a result, how about yours?
When MM and I decided to actually do Raw Steel, we found ourselves long on ideas but short on reality. I mean, there we were, ready and willing to do the deed but, could we? Was there really a chance that the stars would align and the fates allow? Could two people, at opposite ends of the United States, really pull this off?? Well, not alone we sure couldn't! It was all about YOU guys. The support. The encouragement. The suggestions. The reminders that this was bigger than just us. Then came Eric (maiden/priest) and Mick and Thumper (Jim) and, in what seemed like a brief blink of an eye, we had a real, live band!
I will never forget the day I met Phil ( Metal Meltdown.) I am sure there are many here that can relate to what I felt. A kinship. A brotherhood. We both knew that we weregoing to be friends. We just knew it. But there is so much more. There is a bond, forged in music, that we share. Something that NOT everyone experiences. And, three years later, the bond grows stronger.
When Raw Steel was released, the response here was overwhelming. I have never been a "rockstar". I have played live in front of crowds. I have known the joy of performing on stage and all the "perks" that one might expect from that, but I was never a real star. For a brief time back in 2006, I felt like a star. YOU made that happen for me. Your words of kindness. Your support and exuberance. For a short while, I was Rob. I was Glenn. I was a real rockstar. I know Phil felt it, too.
When Forged Steel makes it debut, we may not have the same response but, I do not expect it. this is not a novelty any longer. This is real. At last, we have something more than just some guys that get together and play. We have a bond. And....We have YOU. this album has happened because of you and your love for Judas Priest. And through that love, we have created once again. We have taken the clay of passion and we have sculpted a new and wonderful treasure that all of us can take pride in and share. Thank you all for being here and being so caring. Our gift to you is the music. It is our way of paying tribute to the Band that made all of what we live daily possible. Each and every friendship on this site is possible because of Judas Priest and so, we thank them as well. The gift of music is a timeless and ever-giving moment of life. It rewards with no need to say "thank you" because we all are friends.

I do believe that is the most touching and nicest thing I've heard all day DF. However, you, MM, Thumper and the rest have EARNED that respect and encouragement from us. We are a giant family and therefore, you guys are treated as such...mi casa, su casa so to speak. I've been to a bunch of other band sites in the past, but there is absolutely no better place for me to commune with others who share my love for JP and Metal in general than right here. You guys f***ing rock!!!!!!!!!!! [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Friday, November 21, 2008 3:40:15 PM)| | | Deep Freeze wrote: | | A Tale of Two Albums

THUMPER!??!?!!!!!! My Dear Friends of JP.com, I give you THE man with the Golden Sticks who has ALL the kicks and stompin licks!!! Our remarkable drummer, JIM GLEASON!!!!! Thumper, to us all!!!!!! I truly cannot say enough good things about this man. He is, BY FAR, the most talented percussionist I have EVER had the pleasure of working with, and you can trust me when I say I have met a few VERY good drummers! None of them come close to this man. If we cannot get Scott himself to do the album, this is the next best thing!!! We are so incredibly lucky to have him on our new album as we were on the first one!!! As Jim mentioned, it has been a long, LONG time coming!

HELLO to one and all !!!!! I have returned to the glorious sun (and warmth) of the beautiful southwest. Never have two people been more pleased to see the sight of the Las Vegas strip from an airplane window! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO much to talk about! So many new and wonderful memories for the Princess and I. As expected, MM was the consummate host. And for all those that are interested, just look up the word "quaint" in the dictionary and there will be a picture of MM's house! We were truly taken with his beautiful home and lovely neighborhood.
I am sure there will be pics to review soon. As mentioned, the recording went surprisingly well. VERY smooth. I would like to think it is the result of having done this before, but there is clearly an element of luck in play!!! I will chat more on the trip shortly!!! |

The area here in Western NY that gets it hard is the southern tier...... [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by MG_Metalgoddess from Tuesday, November 18, 2008 12:07:00 PM) |
