About now it is time to chime in as devil's advocate and proffer the question: what if you were an employee of a pharmacy that sold insulin and were hit by a driver who went into a diabetic coma due to the lack of said medication? Ahh...what tragic irony. What an ironic tragedy.  Haaaa!!!!
[Deep Freeze] Friday, November 14, 2008 8:58:38 PM
Ah yes! Irony. I simply could not resist making a comment! Especially since I would hope that you people are smart enough to avoid looking to Alanis Morrisette for guidence in English, word usage or music....HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Justin my friend, your examples are quaint and are fair examples of mild irony, they are a bit to vague for my tastes. Those of you that actually read what I write will recall the following definition in my previous posts but I truly must repeat it!

The word irony is probably one of the most misused of English words. Certainly it is popular but it is most often confused with other more appropriate terms. If I may;
If you are a diabetic and you leave your home to go to the pharmacy to get the insulin you need to live and you are hit by a truck along the way and killed, that is NOT ironic! It is tragic. It is misfortunate. But it is not ironic. Now then, if the truck that hits and kills you is carrying insulin, THAT is ironic! It's all very simple.
[guidogodoy] Friday, November 14, 2008 8:19:17 PM
Alanis and her misuse of the term is fairly well-documented and obviously in error by definition.

I'd consider comparing "irony" in modern usage to Greek tragedy (or sarcasm or causticity, for that matter) more worthy of thought while on the road. Happy thinking / driving!

[Justin Kenny] Friday, November 14, 2008 8:09:18 PM
Right...well...I'm off..yet again, to enjoy yet another weekend.   I thought, however, since most of my verbosity and exchanges are in fact done in  the chatroom (which is why my post count in the NB is so low even after some 5+ years here),  I thought I'd use my departures on Friday nights to share some of my more irreverent cogitations that would ordinarily get shared with those who frequent the chatroom.

As some of you know, I drive for a living...and while I'm as conscientious as I can be at what I do, there are times when I have nothing but time to think...and this is a very dangerous thing for someone with a mind like mine.     Don't misunderstand what I say here...I'm not implying I'm some uber-intelligent summamabitch, or that I'm a potential threat to society as a whole.     Whether or not I'm either/or is that which I'll leave to the interpretations of all who read whatever rants/postulations/suggestions/questions/answers/ what have you that I offer here.      Please trust me when I say...the true aim I have is to entertain...to amuse....with that having been said...I offer this random thought that occurred to me earlier this morning:    **clears throat**
I find irony to be an interesting study.     See...Alanis Morrisette got it all wrong with that pathetically dopey-ass song  "Isn't It Ironic?"      Give ya a case in point...see, she sings about how a black fly in your white chardonnay,  rain on your wedding day,  good advice that you just can't take, etc..etc...are all ironies....these are NOT ironies...a black fly in your chardonnay means either the fly has a penchant for alcohol, or you're too busy holding the glass while standing outdoors...rain on your wedding day is just an unfortunate circumstance if you had plans of getting some choice photos taken outdoors (in some cultures, rain on a wedding day is actually a good omen),  and good advice that you just can't take means it's either advice you just can't use, or you're a thick mutherfucker who won't listen to anyone else but yourself.      So...now that we know what irony isn't... let me offer an example of what irony IS.      Irony...is naming an airport  'Reagan International'  after the very President who laid off all those air traffic controllers.       See?    There's an association going on there with a result or a twist you wouldn't rightly expect.

Having said that...here's an irreverent, and ironic thought.... imagine if you will a Christian-coalition group who are advocates for waiting until you're married to have sexual relations.      Wouldn't it be ironic and funnier than fuck-all if they called themselves   'G.R.A.B.A.S.S.?'       Distilled, the acronym would stand for:

Generations
Rallying
Against
Beelzebub
And
Sexual
Suggestion

....by all means....ponder whilst you chuckle....and I'll see y'all on Monday.

Me either!! I love Thanksgiving!! It's a great time to be back home with family and see relatives you haven't seen in a long time (in my case it would be my baby nephew...I miss him).
It's also a good time to eat turkey like crazy!! HA!!!!! In the few days after Thanksgiving my mom always tries to make something new from what remains of the turkey. One year she made turkey sandwiches, and another year she made turkey enchiladas!! The turkey enchiladas were especially good.

they forgot to tell a few guys.  but, I did read that scientists today (well modern) reviewed the study, and found no errors.  the max muscle strength, breathing and heart rate, blood oxegenation, stride, all that was corect.  it is scientificly imposible to run a sub 4 mile.  that said, there are lots who can do it.

food for thought.  I drove faster today!!!

(Side note...still setting up this new mini laptop and seeing how it performs wtih my main laptop in front of me...so far, really easy to use keyboard).

See, my mosquito theory proven. I should write a book someday about it. Goes right along with my theory about greetings. You tend to get more cheek to cheek kisses the farther south you go. When a male meets a female in Brazil it is two, three in Argentina, almost always one in Mexico, none in the US, rubbing noses in Alaska! LOL! No stealing my idea, now. It'll make me MILLIONS, I tells ya!

Funny you should mention the Berlin wall as VH1 is onto a horrible David Hasslehoff concert as I mini-type! Never been to Germany. Sounds lovely and would love to go myself.

(ok, verdict is in. Sub-notebook is cool but the mouse buttons to the left and right of the trackpad is really difficult. A BIG thumbs up in all other aspects, especially price).

I remember visiting my grandma's village in Guerrero, Mexico a few years ago. It was in the jungle, and since it was mid-summer when we came to visit, there were plenty of mosquitos. Those darn things wouldn't leave me alone!! I had bites all over my arms and legs. My mom was born in that village, so she wasn't affected at all. I wanted to go home by the third day.

Classes are going good, except for one. Pre-calculus is kicking my butt right now. I'm getting some help, though, so I'm getting a little better at it. I'm still in German, yes. I'm thinking about going abroad for a semester next year. Don't know whether to go to Berlin or Munich. Maybe Berlin, to see the remains of the Berlin Wall.

A+ in other words! Excellent! Top marks!

Don't know about Dracula but I can extrapolate based on the mosquito. THOSE blood suckers seem to be attracted to foreign blood! Out here in mosquitolandia, I sit next to my foreign friends when I entertain. Better than a citronella candle! My domestic blood goes untouched!

So howse classes? Still in German, I imagine? What is the toughest course this semester?

Well, according to the donor card I recieved after donating a second time, I have A-positive type blood. I've heard it's one of the most common blood types, and I think AB and O-negative types are rare (I'm not sure). So I guess if Dracula were to drink any of my blood, it would be like drinking water. Sometimes makes me wonder if Dracula has a favorite human blood-type.

Well, I probably don't need another shirt as I am the typical guy who sees no need to throw ANY shirt out (hey, my Michigan State wins the '86 Rosebowl still gets laughs), I might just go give a shot at that free wardrobe. I commend you for donating blood, though. Harder than running, IMO. Well...perhaps not running a 1.07 minute mile, LOL, but still. Very nice.

You know, my mother is a hematologist and I really have no idea as to my blood-type. What are you? Anything cool? What is the universal donor? Ahhh...dredging up some long-since forgotten biology lessons. Mom would be ashamed of me.
