I see your point...I got it...but priest(after rob's return) kept doing whatever they wanted...you can see it with the last two albums....of course a band needs to sell their products...otherwise they would be unknown...and we fans would be disapointed and furious if we couldn't get their music....guitars and other stuff are not for free and they also need to eat...but metallica changed to a comercial band, they lost their identity...they lost that thing that made us like their music...and of course they turned their back to their real fans...on the other hand priest keeps trying new things, and nostradamus is a piece of evidence...for those who like it(i like it) and for those who don't [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Monday, February 09, 2009 12:56:46 PM) | | Deep Freeze wrote: | | I see. It is interesting that you would put it this way. ....I refuse to give credit to a band which turned its back to heavy metal to become a heavy comercial band.... As much as our dear friend Mr. Uno may take exception to what I am going to say, isn't that what Priest did with Ripper? Very much like the grinding, crunchy "Nu-Metal" sound that is more commercial and sells more. They were trying to keep the cash coming in. Trying to remain relevant in the face of a HUGE change.
Of course, there are some that may point to Rob's return as a commercial gimmick. I can accept that. Say what you will but Priest, as with any other act, want to sell their records. That is what they do. It is how they make a living. For me, and most fans of the Band, Rob is what makes Priest. He is THE voice so I do not view his return as previously mentioned but I can see where some might make that connection. Anyway, it all comes down to selling the product. I don't think that Judas Priest are in a position at this stage of their career where they really need money..I mean gazillions. They certainly enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, I'm sure. I think Nostradamus is a good example of that. They did something they wanted to do, whether or not it is a commercial success. And I do not mean to insinuate that I do not like the album, because I do like it. I just believe that the Band has gone beyond the need for commercialism and so things like the Grammy award are nice but they won't really affect the Band's future. | | paorcamp wrote: | | NOOOO....I refuse to give credit to a band which turned its back to heavy metal to become a heavy comercial band....I won't give credit to a group who prefered fame and fortune over the real escence of music...sorry...but I can't...that's not selling more cd's by hardworking...that's selling more cd's because they left their roots and their true personality to do what the industry wants them to do...and that's something a real band would never do!!...that's not what made metallica famous...now they became shitallica...Who's the master of puppets now???huh???not you metallica...that's for sure!!! DF...you're right....we're not complaining about winning or not the prize...we're doing it because we don't like the way it is...and metallica may be having more people during their public presentations...but those who go are not real metal-heads....they can't say they love heavy metal just because they went to a metallica's show...I'm not saying all of them, but most of them...because if you see even old metallica fans say that their band is lost....maybe forever... Perhaps Uno is on to something as well? Maybe Priest did not "deserve" to win. Of course, we have to go back to exactly what it is that was at stake. Recognition? Maybe. Acknowledgement from peers? Possibly. Marketing power? Certainly. Metallica continue to draw a very large crowd when they play. Priest do not. At least not here in the US, from what I have seen. The Vegas show was OK.. maybe two or three thousand fans. The venue was small I admit, but we saw them in So Cal on the AoR tour and the Irvine venue had maybe five to eight thousand at most. Point is, they do not draw like they used to. Certainly not going to fill a large arena like they did in the "old" days.
My complaint is not really about Priest missing out on the award as it is the overall representation of the industry by complete nimrods. The Pop Music world has always been this way for me. The public sucks, plain and simple. People that buy this garbage are idiots. They would not know musical talent if it was drawn out and labeled for them. But it sells and industry officials go where the money is, no doubt. You may not care for old Clive, but that man is a friggin genius as far as marketing this crap. I tried to watch the Grammys, and after a very short period of time, I couldn'take it any longer. Coldplay's Vida La whatever has been dubbed a "masterpiece." I guess I don't get it. I think it is terrible. I knew that JP was not going to win. It's the Grammys for pete's sake. There is just not a place for them on these kinds of award shows. It is based on what sold according to the Billboard Top 100. Or what store the artists/group decided to mainly sell out of. I did enjoy Paul MCartney w/ David Grole on drums and Radiohead w/ the USC band. Other than that I didn't see anything that kept me tuned in. |

Perhaps too we should consider what the awards are for. They are realy a marketing tool. sell records. now where does the industry get the most bang for the award? not in metal, thats for sure. and within metal, priest isnt going to shift a ton of albums if they win. metalica, well they sell lots, so.... I cannot help but wonder; had Priest won, would there be as much bitterness or disdain for this show? I think , for our group at least, it may have softened an already terrible experience but I am almost sure we would still look at this for what it is; garbage. I do not understand the "voting" process, so I cannot comment on the who, but the what is obvious. I am obviously in the minority here, but even though I was so disappointed that Priest was overlooked, I have to say... I really enjoyed the show itself. I thought Justin Timberlake with Al Green and Keith Urban was great, I loved seeing Radiohead with the USC Marching Band, and well, Paul Mc Cartney, and then... Robert Plant and ALlison Kraus. Of COURSE it is a huge popularity contest and marketing game. I agree that Robert Plant should have been honored YEARS ago. but stil, it was pretty entertaining. I am not a fan of rap, so I kind of ignored all that, but otherwise, I liked the show. |

I like parts of Death Magnetic. Not a Metallica purest, so I can see where St. Anger pissed a lot of people off. Don't think I'll condemn them 'cause they got an award Priest could give two shakes about anyway.
Priest does RULE! And should have at least been mentioned; although, I'm thinking logistically, with alot of bands touring, not many metal bands could, or would, interrupt their schedule to be there ... LOL The no mention bit really has my blood boiling. WTF?!?!
I'm off to make breakfast.

LOL ... Vail, I'm glad you posted the reminder. If you hadn't, I might have missed part of one of the weirdest nights on television!
I went to the grammy site, about 45 minutes to showtime (by my clock anyway). Once there I went to the "list of nominees". Scrolling down the list I noticed little Grammy icons beside some of the nominee names ... hmm? Didn't think anything about it really. I could have stumbled onto one of the "prediction" pages. Yeah, right. Then reading an article about Grammys blunders, or something-or-other, there in black and white was a comment about awards Grammy would not live down, including awarding JethroTull the first HardRock/Metal award, and MilliVanillie best new artist - LOL Then the show starts! WooHoo!!! U2 finishes their number and the first presenter is announced .... WHITNEY HOUSTON!!!!! 3 times during her "speech" I remember saying, "Have another drink, Whitney. Just shutup and present the award" She couldn't just announce the winner, could she. No. She had to acknowledge Clive, her Daddy, Davis! Mara, what kind of control does this wee little man really weild in the grand scheme of things. I think I wanna sit next to him at the next event ... HA! The winner in the category Whitney presented was Jennifer Hudson?! Al Green was also in that category. Clearly it was a sympathy honor. Following that presentation, during the next commercial, I went back to check the list, and was sooooooo disappointed. I mean really. If yo uoneed to post the winners in advance for the press, use a secure password page. Idiots! I went to bed.
Looks like politics is alive and well in the US music industry.
This was worse than a joke. It was like watching the twilight zone ... imagine if you will |

I was seriously hoping that if JP doesnt get shit, at least a decent band like Dragonforce would. Yeah, right. If a non-metal person thinks of metal, what do they think of first? Metallica, thats what. "Ooooooh! Metallica! Thats so metal! It says so in their name!" And the results are a confirmation of that...
But, on the bright side... Plant got something, as did Springsteen and Satriani, so I guess that those that voted for them can be spared from the firing squad. As for the rest... Fire away. |

Just watched the Grammys...what a load of shit that was... I apologize for trying to remind everyone...I didn't think it was going to be that bad.
Ahhh, ef it... Grammy award or not...Judas Priest are the winners in my eyes!! All three of those eyes!!!!!!! |

With the so called "artist" who recieved a grammy tonight, I am kind of glad Priest is not included in that crowd. |

I can honestly say I don't think I have ever used these smilies before. The Grammy's are an utter load of crap. I actually think they are out to destroy true rock music. Coldplay is a rock group? since when? Has Led Zeppelin ever won a Grammy? Maybe they have. If not, it took Robert Plant hooking up with Allison Krause to get him a Grammy? WTF?? Metallica? and to think we were ALL upset when Jethro Tull won the first time Metal was introduced to the Grammy's. Let's talk, whoever votes for this thing, knows nothing about music. Best Polka? Jimmy Sturr? Again? Come on, is this the only polka band they know of? How about The Polka Family? or Eddie Blazoncyk? |
