It's sad our children are not allowed to grow up the way we did. If they knew how much freedom had been stripped from them they would probably be pretty mad about it. Hmmmm..... that is a very interesting question HB. I think that with all the technology we have today, we hear about things almost instantly. I think just as many bad things happened to people years ago, we just didn't hear about it unless we lived nearby.
My personal philosophy is to trust my instincts about people. When we hire someone new, I know within minutes whether they will be good or not and I've never been wrong or surprised. I can tell right away if something is "off" about someone and I keep my guard up. I make sure that I know my kids friends and parents, so yes they can go over to their friends house. But I would never let them go over and play somewhere if I didn't know the family - better to have the friend come to my house until I meet the parents. I trust people unless I have some feeling that I shouldn't and when I get that feeling I trust it. Always better safe than sorry!
I've met 4 people on this board so far and they have all been FANTASTIC people that I am very proud to know. I hope to meet many more before Priest is through too. I'm hoping we can all get together for a show one day!!! I have also met up with QT from this site, that was in a more public space, which makes good sense and it was great to meet her. I would love to meet more people from this site, and think that I would do so, if I could and if reasonable precautions could be worked out (meet in a public area, etc)
I know that in general our lack of trust hurts people today. 2 examples would be, if you pass a broken down car on the side of the highway in the middle of nowhere do people stop and help? not many. can your kids go to a friends house to play in the evening? not often.
sad state of affairs that we are this way, and I wonder, is society more messed up these days, or do things that go badly get spread around more |

Wow! That is horific! Very true though that in this day and age we have to be super careful. If you're meeting someone online, make sure it's in a public place and preferably with someone with you. So sad that someone can do something so evil to a trusting, caring person Spa. I am sorry for your loss and the hurt you must be feeling. Speaking of quiet, I lost a school chum this past week. He was always kind, and I can not imagine him being the victim of violent crime.
Word to the wise, my friends, watch who you make friends with online. His murderer came from New Jersey. He came for a visit and my friend took him to the top of the mountain on October 16th, to show him the view from the overlook there. Last anyone saw of him was at the Wendy's in Bluefield VA, earlier that day. Being that I knew him, I can only assume he took his visiting friend to see the beautiful overlook and was trying to entertain his internet friend.
He was found on October 30 in an old metal storage building which used to be a store many years ago. He had been strangled. The person that found him was a young boy, who only went into the shed to check on things at his grandfather's bequest. So many lives shattered, so much pain involved all because we all are too willing to trust someone, in letters.
I'm a member of the untrust group these days. Measures will always be taken to ensure the safety of myself and loved ones from this kind of event. |

It is very sad. I by no means wish this post to go against the people I have met here (save one, and we all know who that is) but this is just a cautionary tale, a real one, about what can happen when you meet someone online. Like you said, they can say all the right things and be not what you would expect at all.
I'm very sorry for him. I know his last thoughts must have been full of confusion because he was such a trusting person. It haunts me; what he must have felt.

Measures will always be taken to ensure the safety of myself and loved ones from this kind of event. |

we are sort of unique. the union came in about 20 years ago, mostly younger workers then. now most of the workforce is over 65, and most of those are semi retired former managers from other industrys. put that with the fact that we are by a long shot the most conservative, least unionized province in canada, and the fact that in the last negotiation the company offered an increase of 17% where the union asked for 10 (couldnt hire then, now that raise is going to cause issues if we ever get to discuss economics). if any of the employees actualy decided to take interest in the effort to decertify I am sure it would be a quick vote. problem is, they have golf to go to and such. Wow! I thought I'd have more time to play but 52 hours at work last week and 64 this week, I'm pooped!! lol No complaints though as the holidays are drawing near and with high unemployment, I thank God every day for my job!!
HB, minimum wage here in the States is $7.55 / hr, though individual States can mandate a higher amount and some do.
I totally agree that theft from the company cannot be ignored!! No excuse for that!! Safety violations are serious as well, but I've learned that every situation is usually unique unto itself and requires a thorough investigation.
As far as workers themselves hating their union, I've never really heard of such a thing. I can understand workers not liking the politics involved or that it's hard for a company to reward good employees because of their contract, or that maybe they've had a bad experience with a rep and feel that they deserved better because that sometimes does happen especially if the rep(s) are not well trained or knowledgeable. Again, most situations are unique unto themselves.
I've found that the rep usually gets a bad rap when something goes wrong because it's easier to be mad at and take frustration out on a co-worker (which a rep is) than to lash out and those in management who wronged them and for obvious reasons, no fear of losing their job that way. A lot of times a worker may have issues that just aren't grieveable regardless of how wronged they feel and because the rep can't do anything about it, they take it out on them.
Spa, yes! Any non-union employer in the statee of Indiana can terminate an employee "at will", and that sucks!! No warning, no just cause!! For this reason alone it pays to be under a union umbrella!! |

Ha! Thank you Spa! And Vail! My coco heros lol..
OMW!! I just got back from a day of offroad motorcycle training. I feel like my back is about to break! Lots of balance stuff on the bike from 9am til 3:30pm and I am stuffed! But learnt a lot of cool stuff like riding with one foot off the peg and then riding whilst kneeling on the sadle.. felt very weird at first but once mastered was pretty cool ha ha ha. Also sitting side saddle while riding. Now I'm not too sure how that is supposed to help me for general off roading but it was still pretty cool to be able to do. In case I haven't made my point clear : MY BACK IS KILLING ME!!! lol. Now I have to go and catch my kids bunnies, out them back in their hatch and then go teach my Sunday School class.. No rest for the wicked... or the peacemakers either ha ha ha~ [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by spapad from Saturday, November 13, 2010 1:54:27 PM) | | spapad wrote: | | Here you go Joe:

interesting about the At will legislation. most states are that way but alow for implied contract, which I would think makes a bit more sense. our rules are like those that Spa described, need to prove that you tried to corect the behavior and the worker would not except in severe cases.

Wow, your employer has the will to fire you for no reason? No matter how long you have been there? Here, only in your first 90 days of employment can you fire someone without a just reason, after that you have to follow protocol and write them up, 2 times and third is suspension without pay, 4 is fired. Of couse that is for stuff like no call no show too many late times etc... If you do something truely out of line you'll get fired on the spot. No wonder you need unions with that kind of hire/fire bottom line.
I know NJ is suffering huge embarassment from the "jersey shore" fools and have had to deal with Bon Jovi, but still they don't take it on the chin as bad as poor WV, one of the poorest states in the Union. I fee rather fortunate they broke off from us during the war. The whole of the United States thinks of them as inbred, uneducated, hillbillies. There is about 5 to maybe 10 % of the population that truly own that moniker! The problem is they are such loud mouth nasties, they always leave an impression on those they meet.
So, while I live in VA and work in WV, I'd NEVER want to live in WV. Couldn't stand the shame! lol [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by ron h from Monday, November 08, 2010 7:37:37 PM)

How's everyone this fine and sunny Monday? Well, not sunny here but it must be somewhere in the world lol. I'm good.. Getting ready for one last evening class and then I can relax 'til the end of the year.. As far as night classes go. Still got two more kids concerts to get through then we done for the year. Saturday was hectic as hell but well worth it. Had to literally be in three places at one time. Managed to do the morning rehearsal, then Zoey's first Ballet show at the same time as Zakk's karate grading. Lucky they have two parents lol. So we split up and each grabbed a kid and headed to an event. Then Zoey's second ballet show was in the evening so I had that shift. Craig had to do sound for the CMA fallen bikers memorial and then CMA meeting so I hardly saw him all of yesterday. Well tired and looking forward to the week so that we can see each other and get some rest! lol |

I rememer when I was a child watching the news on months long miner strikes. The media always went and found the miner who lived in a cabin with an outhouse, who was the most uneducated person to find in the area.
For that reason alone I'm glad that VA, and finally WV, are right to work states. Got tired of people thinking just because of the state I was from when we vacationed north that we all lived on hilltops past Richmond and all have nothing but farms. I really hated that dated opinion of our state. Unfortunately, that opinion is still out there. Not so much for VA but WV is the laughing stock of the U.S. Glad my plates read VA. | | Head banger wrote: | | sounds good. Well, it's finally over with!! As most of you know I'm a union negotiator at the plant I work at. We've been in negotiations for a new contract since March and it's now a done deal!! The ratification vote was about 92% in favor of, which, to me, is vindication of the comittees hard work. In this day and age when unions are getting weaker, every contract gets harder and harder to make gains on. Fortunately, we made no concessions anywhere and made gains all across the board.
Now that this is over with, I can now come out and play a little more and Bev can quit rolling her eyes at me lol!! |

Wow, I could have almost walked that time. But at least he tried. Most people would never do that. I feel for each and every one of the marathon folks as to just participate and finish is an accomplishment of their own. I really find it sad that the world is more interested in the celebs than the actual winner. Seriously, try searching for the winning time and you'll be forced to slog through countless pages talking about "Jared, the Subway guy!" Maybe if the three Africans that took men's 1, 2, and 3 were on "Dancing With the Stars..." | | spapad wrote: | | OH come on Guid, can't blame the guy for trying. Even if it is incentive (money) oriented.
I hope Al did good, he tries hard to stay a decent size and it is not easy for him even with the operation. I would hate to have to work that hard to stay a sound weight. |

I'm from a right to work state. Unions exist but are not very influencial anymore.
Nice job! I'd love to have 11 paid holidays a year! I'd also love it much if our employer picked up more on our health insurance than they do, but our premiums would go down dramtically if we could get everyone there to participate in the insurance, but it's hard to get employees who work at lower wages to even consider health insurance. As for the vacation, I should be coming up on 3 weeks this spring myself! Now, if they could just give us sick days that weren't such a joke. lol [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by ron h from Sunday, November 07, 2010 7:42:17 AM) | | ron h wrote: | | Bev is well versed in procedure and all things HR, so it was helpful bouncing ideas off her. Some of the gains we made on the economic side are we now have 11 paid Holidays a year, 3 weeks paid vacation, employer paid health insurance and a $.75 raise!!
