Rammstein to Begin Mixing New Album

German industrial metallers RAMMSTEIN have updated their official web site with the following message:

"After finishing the first part of their studio recordings [for the new RAMMSTEIN album] successfully, RAMMSTEIN have started to put the final touches to their new songs. For example, they're thinking about the usage of strings and choirs. Therefore, the band sat down with the orchestra arranger Sven Helbig last week. Aside from the last musical changes, the final lyrical changes are being made, too. We're highly awaiting the next steps of the album production: the mixing of the songs. It is supposed to start mid-March and will take about six up to eight weeks."

RAMMSTEIN recorded the initial tracks for the new album in Los Angeles with Jacob Hellner and the production team of Ulf Kruckenberg and Florian Ammon. A studio was rented near San Francisco for the bulk of the main recording work.

RAMMSTEIN's "Völkerball" DVD was released in North America in September 2007. The disc features performances from France, England, Japan and Russia. The DVD was released in three different formats. The standard two-disc DVD/CD package contains a 140-minute live video and 75-minute live CD. The special-edition package also includes a tour documentary and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of "Reise, Reise". Finally, the limited collectors' edition contains four discs packaged in a 190-page book with photos from the tour.

RAMMSTEIN's last album, "Rosenrot", received its long-overdue U.S. release in March 2006 via Universal Music. The CD, which was certified platinum in Germany for sales in excess of 200,000 copies within two weeks of release in October 2005, topped the official album chart in Germany, Austria and Finland, and landed at No. 2 in Sweden and Denmark, No. 4 in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, No. 5 in France, No. 6 in Mexico, No. 11 in Italy and No. 29 in the U.K. In addition, "Rosenrot" achieved gold status in Austria, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

New All Acoustic Album Due From Yngwie

Legendary Swedish guitarist YNGWIE MALMSTEEN will release an all-instrumental acoustic album, "Angels Of Love", which will contain rearrangements of his ballad songs played on acoustic guitar and string and choir arrangements only. It is a masterpiece showing the tender, delicate version of his classic songs as well as a new composition. A March 10 release via Rising Force Records is expected.

"Perpetual Flame", the new album from Malmsteen, sold around 2,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Released on October 14, 2008, the CD is the first-ever Yngwie effort to be issued via Rising Force Records (distributed via Koch) and it marks the debut of Malmsteen's new singer, ex-JUDAS PRIEST/ICED EARTH frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens.

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN will team up with DEEP PURPLE for the following Japanese dates:

April 08 - Tokyo, JPN @ International Forum
April 09 - Zepp, JPN @ Nagoya
April 10 - Hiroshima, JPN @ Koseinenkin Kaikan
April 12 - Kanazawa, JPN @ Kanko Kaikan
April 13 - Osaka, JPN @ Koseinenkin Kaikan
April 15 - Tokyo, JPN @ International Forum

Yngwie Malmsteen was inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk on October 13, 2008 in front of the Guitar Center at 7425 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

Hollywood's RockWalk is the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution of rock 'n' roll, blues and R&B. Yngwie Malmsteen's handprints will reside alongside the handprints, signatures, and faces of other equally accomplished musicians and innovators such as Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, John Lee Hooker and EARTH WIND & FIRE, among numerous others.

Doro Interview

Sweden's Metalshrine web site recently conducted an interview with the German metal queen Doro Pesch. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metalshrine: What's it like celebrating 25 years [as a heavy metal singer]?

Doro Pesch: Oh, man, I tell you... I can't believe it. Time flew by. I still remember when I had my first band and times went so quickly. I definitely have great memories and I never thought it would get this exciting. We just celebrated my 25th anniversary in my home town, in Düsseldorf, Germany and we had many guests and many guests from the past and the '80s. And actually one of the highlights, we did like a little reunion with my old WARLOCK band members and sometimes I turned around and looked at my drummer and remembering that he joined the band when he was like 15 and now he's a grown man and his daughter is now 15. It was so amazing!

Metalshrine: I guess things turned out better than you thought when you started out?

Doro: You know, when we started out we just wanted to do music. Actually, when I had my first band, the word heavy metal wasn't even around. At least we didn't know about it and there weren't any magazines and then a couple of years later came the first fanzines. A couple of fans were always listening when we were rehearsing and some people said, "Are you a heavy metal band?" and we said, "Yeah, sounds cool!" I think we were really lucky to be at the right time and the right place and to me, metal always meant freedom. To do whatever you feel like with full power and energy. I love hardcore stuff and diehard stuff, but I love anthems and very melodic stuff, so it always meant freedom. I always tried to do my best and I didn't think that we would survive that long. After we did the second album, "Hellbound"... it was so difficult to make and it took about a year and it was really painful and I was so exhausted I said I would never ever do a record again in my life and now it's record number 17. I guess what doesn't kill you makes you harder.

Metalshrine: What was it from the beginning that turned you on to metal? Were there any special records you bought or discovered when you were younger? What really got you into the metal scene?

Doro: I remember my first concert was WHITESNAKE in 1980 and it was amazing. David Coverdale was a god. He was so good! Then I thought that every concert would be like that but they weren't. Next band I saw, I was still working and the only one with a car so I always had to pick up everybody and we were running late... I was a big JUDAS PRIEST fan and I had a PRIEST record at home, but back then there weren't any magazines... so we walked into the concert and everybody was freaking out and it was great and the I turned to my guitar player and said, "It's so unbelievable! I'm so blown away!" and he said, "Hey, that's not PRIEST!" I said "Really?", and it was ACCEPT. They were, like, mind-blowing and then came PRIEST and that was unbelievable too, but then I became an ACCEPT fan too. I remember we had the first record out "Burning The Witches" and it had been out for just two or three weeks and some promoter asked us if we wanted to play and it was either Belgium or Holland and I don't remember the club, but I remember the venue and it was pretty nice, maybe a couple of hundred people. He said, "Well, there's another band playing and I think you guys would fit with them. Do you want to play?" We said, "Yeah!" and he said, "The other band is from America and they're brand new." So we did the gig and it was great and there was so much energy and it was crazy and stage-diving going on. After we played, we said, "Let's check out the other band!" Some people said they were from San Francisco and they just had first their record out and it was METALLICA! So I became a total METALLICA fan and the beginning of metal was super exciting. And yeah... we had our first record out and we signed to Mausoleum Records in Belgium, and, to be honest, it was just because they had the coolest logo. That was the way to go. We had no idea and we just wanted to make music. We didn't know anything about the business aspects and we didn't care. We just thought, "Cool, we're doing a record!" Then the record became very successful and we were totally surprised. W had no idea that so many people knew about the band and it was getting more and more exciting and then we got picked up by another label, Polygram, and then some people said that we could play the legendary Monsters Of Rock festival. It was in '86 and a great lineup with OZZY, SCORPIONS, MOTÖRHEAD, DEF LEPPARD, MICHAEL SCHENKER and us. Then we got on the JUDAS PRIEST tour in 86 and it was the first time I came to Sweden. It was like a dream come true and then I quit my job, when we got the PRIEST tour.

Aerosmith Bassist Update

AEROSMITH bassist Tom Hamilton has issued the following update:

"The big news is that we had our first meeting and strategy session with our producer Brendan O'Brien [VELVET REVOLVER, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, PEARL JAM, AC/DC, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS]. We've been wanting to work with him for a while. The meeting came on the heels of the band all working together for the first two weeks. Things are moving along and it's now on the fast track. We had a day where we all got to listen to everyone's songs and ideas. In the next few weeks we'll be narrowing down what we've got. We can already see things coming into focus — even as new ideas are popping up right and left. Joe [Perry, guitar] survived his knee operation and has obviously done lots of playing during his recuperation.

"On a personal note — I went to Disney World this past weekend and took a few spins on the Rockin' Rollercoaster. I couldn't stop feeling the irony of the fact that we have a ride and it's been there so long. Still not quite used to it!

"Our guide did a masterful job of moving us around so I could spy on all the people getting ready to go. We went out front and watched everyone in line listening to our music and anticipating the experience. Then we snuck into the area where you see a film of us 'in the studio.' It was dark enough so I could actually stand there and watch it. I haven't looked at that footage for a few years. My hair was a bit on the short side but I was re-satisfied by my choice of the blue satin shirt.

"After that we quickly infiltrated the area where the riders actually get into their seats. It was hilarious seeing people nervously try to get ready for the intensity of the ride. It was awesome hearing the screams of the recently launched competing with 'Back in the Saddle' screaming out of the sound system. Then it was our turn. I've been on the thing many times but not for a while. Just like everyone else my pulse rate leaped. I got the full force of that "uh oh here we go" feeling.

"When it first starts you rush to the beginning of a tunnel and stop...and wait for what feels like an eon. Then out of nowhere, just as your head's about to pop from adrenalin, a massive mechanism flings you down the track like a kid throwing a paper plane. You hit sixty miles an hour in well under four seconds. After that, you're in the hands of physics as you plunge into 4g loops and wickedly exhilarating corkscrews for two solid minutes. At the end of the ride you wind up, where else?... The gift shop. I was still lightly stunned from our second or third turn as I wandered in. That's when the recognition factor kicked in. Pens, paper, t-shirts and snapshot cameras came up out of nowhere for a frantic fifteen minute autograph and picture blast. It was almost as scary and fun as the ride!"

Tim "Ripper" Owens Solo Album

Powerhouse American heavy metal vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) will release his first solo album, "Play My Game", in May via SPV/Steamhammer. The offering consists of around a dozen brand-new tracks that Owens composed himself or together with renowned friends, such as Bob Kulick, Chris Caffery (SAVATAGE, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA), Mike Callahan (ex-EARSHOT) and John Comprix (BEYOND FEAR, RINGWORM).

The list of guest musicians featured on Owens' solo debut is even more spectacular:

Bob Kulick
Chris Caffery
Mike Callahan (ex-EARSHOT)
Doug Aldrich (WHITESNAKE)
Michael Wilton (QUEENSRŸCHE)
Jeff Loomis (NEVERMORE)
Steve Stevens (BILLY IDOL)

Marco Mendoza (ex-WHITESNAKE)
Billy Sheehan (MR BIG, ex-DAVID LEE ROTH)
Dave Ellefson (ex-MEGADETH)
James Lomenzo (MEGADETH)
Tony Franklin (ex-BLUE MURDER)
Dennis Hayes (BEYOND FEAR)

Simon Wright (DIO, ex-AC/DC)
Brett Chassen

Fans and experts alike will love this sensational all-star lineup and may rest assured that the haunting songs will effortlessly live up to this illustrious cast of musicians: Tim "Ripper" Owens has never sounded more impressive, melodic and multi-faceted!

"I've gotten better as a songwriter," Owens explains. "And I also write songs that the fans can really get into and get their fist pounding in the air. I've always been a great fan of the BLACK SABBATH lineup featuring Ronnie James Dio, and I love JUDAS PRIEST. Both bands delivered records that are straightforward and go directly to the bloodstream — which also happens to be my compositional approach."

"Play My Game" will be released on the following dates:

Germany, Austria, Switzerland: May 15
Rest of Europe: May 18
USA, Canada: May 19

Delux 3-Disc Edition of Paranoid to be Released

On April 6, Universal Music in the U.K. will release the deluxe expanded edition of BLACK SABBATH's classic "Paranoid album.

"Paranoid" is the first release in a set of BLACK SABBATH deluxe expanded editions. Each remastered album includes an additional disc of previously unheard outtakes, demos and instrumental tracks taken from the original studio sessions.

"Paranoid" is expanded to a triple-disc containing the extremely rare 1974 Quadraphonic mix of the album. The album also includes deluxe digipak gatefold packaging with expanded booklets containing rare and previously unseen photographs, comprehensive sleeve-notes telling the story behind each album and include images of rare single covers and memorabilia from the period.

"Paranoid" is the second album by the British heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH. It was released in the United Kingdom during September 1970, and contains some of their most famous work, including the songs "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track. The album is regarded as a classic of the heavy metal genre and one of the most influental heavy metal albums. It has been certified four-times-platinum, having sold over four million copies in the U.S. alone, making it BLACK SABBATH's best-selling album.

The "Paranoid" single, released before the album, reached No. 4 in the U.K. Pushed by its success, the album hit number one in the U.K., and is the only BLACK SABBATH album to have done so. The U.S. release was held until January 1971, as the "Black Sabbath" album was still on the charts at the time of "Paranoid"'s U.K. release. The album broke into the top ten in the U.S. in March 1971, and would go on to sell four million copies in the U.S. alone, with virtually no radio airplay.

New Oldschool Live Testament Album to Be Released

Prosthetic Records has set an April 14 release date for "Live at Eindhoven '87", a complete recording of TESTAMENT's performance at the 1987 edition of the Dynamo Open Air festival. A metal history lesson of the highest order, "Live at Eindhoven '87" sees the group's original lineup — vocalist Chuck Billy, guitarists Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, bassist Greg Christian, and drummer Louie Clemente — at their absolute hungriest.

"Live at Eindhoven '87" track listing:

01. Disciples of the Watch
02. The Haunting
03. Apocalyptic City
04. First Strike Is Deadly
05. Burnt Offerings
06. Alex Skolnick Guitar Solo
07. Over The Wall
08. Do Or Die
09. Curse of the Legion of Death (C.O.T.L.O.D.)
10. Reign of Terror

Before Wacken, there was Dynamo.

For 20 years, the Dynamo Open Air festival — originally held in 1986 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Dynamo rock club in Eindhoven, Holland — was one of metal's most important annual events, peaking in 1995 when 118,000 fans packed the grounds of an abandoned Dutch military airport to see four dozen acts play on three different stages over three June days.

In 1987, though, Dynamo was still in its infancy. For that matter, so was the performer who would leave the biggest mark on the event that year — Bay Area thrashers TESTAMENT. After their debut album, "The Legacy", made instant waves worldwide, the group was invited to make their European debut at the second Dynamo festival.

After a "warm-up" show at the 300-capacity Dynamo club the night before, TESTAMENT took the stage on a rainy June 8, 1987 and floored the 14,000 fans in attendance with an aggressive, fiery 45-minute set that showcased much of the material on "The Legacy". Five songs from their performance were captured on the EP "Live at Eindhoven", which was issued as a cassette and a 12" LP. However, the band's full set was never released officially — until now.

Featuring a stunning remastered sound, new artwork by Carson Slovak (CENTURY, ALL THAT REMAINS, ANTAGONIST) and liner notes by Skolnick, "Live at Eindhoven '87" is a must-have for TESTAMENT fans both old and new. Excerpts from the album's liner notes can currently be viewed on Skolnick's Skolnotes blog, while the above-mentioned version of "Disciples of the Watch" can be heard at this location. The Prosthetic Webshop is offering $12 pre-orders.

In addition to recently re-releasing TESTAMENT's 1997 album "Demonic" — hailed as "the most evil-sounding album of their career" (AMG) — and 1999's "The Gathering" (praised by Metal Hammer as the most important metal album of the late '90s), as well as the 2001 re-recordings collection "First Strike Still Deadly", Prosthetic has also just reissued "Demonic" and "The Gathering" on gatefold, etched double-vinyl. Strictly limited to 1,000 copies each, each pressing also includes 100 colored LPs (gold for "The Gathering", red for "Demonic").

Duff McKagan Interview conducted a brief interview with bassist Duff McKagan (VELVET REVOLVER, DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED, ex-GUNS N' ROSES) last week. A couple of excerpts follow below.

On a possible GUNS N' ROSES reunion:

"People ask me that all the time. I certainly don't sit here and go, 'God, I wish that's going to happen.' I don't even know what's going to happen in four weeks from now in my life so I'm not going to be one of those guys who's like, 'Fuck that, that'll never happen.' It could very well happen. It would have to be right and it would have to be righteous for everybody and for the fans and it would have to be like a kick-ass thing or it would just kind of be sour, I think… I mean, I love Axl [Rose]. We've been through a lot of shit together and shit nobody can take away from us no matter what people try to make of a squabble."

On former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler taking part in the VH1 "reality" shows "Celebrity Rehab" and "Sober House":

"I watched about four minutes… somebody said, 'Dude, you got to watch this thing.' It was too hard for me to watch. My stomach started getting queasy and I couldn't watch it. It seems a little dirty, the whole deal. I know the Dr. Drew guy, and he is a strong member of the sober community and he's helped a lot of people and I think his thing is, 'Hey man, if one person can get sober out of this whole experience… great.' I'll put it this way: if I was still using, I would never go on that show. I don't get it. I just don't like reality TV."

New Van Halen Album?

Album On Hold Until WOLFGANG Graduates - Feb. 17, 2009
World Entertainment News Network reports that Eddie Van Halen has told Hustler magazine that VAN HALEN has put its plans for a new studio album on hold so that so the group's youngest member, Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's 17-year-old son), can finish high school.

Eddie Van Halen said, "We're just waiting for the right time. I took Wolfie out of school for a whole year to do the tour. It was just a bad time because the 11th grade is the year when they prep you for college. First he graduates, then we'll sit down, give (frontman) Dave (Lee Roth) a call and see if he feels like whooping and hollering a little bit. I've got a ton of music."

He added, "Just a few weeks ago I almost yanked him out of school. But I do want him to graduate. The thing is, he already has a profession and a career that he's successful, talented and gifted at."

VAN HALEN recruited Wolfgang, then 15, to play bass with the band when they kicked off its 2007 world tour.

Eddie Van Halen told Hustler, "He showed me a thing or two. Like when we were rehearsing for the tour, I hadn't played some of the songs in almost 25 years, so I had to relearn the shit. I'd start playing and Wolfgang would say, 'Dad, you're playing it wrong.' I'm going, 'Shit, of all people to kick my ass, it's my own son.'"

Eddie Van Halen will marry his fiancée/publicist Janie Liszewski this summer in a ceremony officiated by his older brother and bandmate Alex. The couple will wed in the backyard of Van Halen's California home in June.

Eddie Van Halen told Hustler, "It's a small wedding, with only family and a few close friends here at home in our backyard. It'll be nice. My brother is going to marry us. He can actually legally marry us. He's an ordained minister. Reverend Al. It's gonna be great."

It also includes their double album of covers, 1998's "Garage Inc.", the 1999 live album "S&M", the 2004 EP "Some Kind of Monster" (from the documentary of the same title), the 2007 EP "Live From Live Earth", and "I Disappear" from the 2000 "Mission Impossible 2" soundtrack. In addition, buyers will receive eight bonus live tracks: "The Four Horseman", "Whiplash", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Creeping Death", "Battery", "The Thing That Should Not Be", "One", and "...And Justice For All".

"The Complete Metallica" will be released during a high-profile period for the Los Angeles-based hard-rock heroes. On March 29, Activision will release the highly anticipated video game Guitar Hero: Metallica, featuring 28 songs from the band's nearly 30-year career. In addition, METALLICA will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which honors legendary rock and roll performers, in a ceremony to take place in Cleveland on April 4.

METALLICA has just completed its first proper tour of the United States and Canada in four years in support of the platinum-selling "Death Magnetic", which debuted at No. 1 in September 2008 and won two Grammy Awards for "Best Metal Performance" (for the track "My Apocalypse") and "Best Recording Package." They are currently on an extensive European tour.
