Yes, as in Buddy Blaze, but the maker of the guitar came to M.I. and tried to sell them to us and it wasn't him.  They were $1200, but he'd be willing to deal if we could order 3 or more.  Yeah, right !  M.I. students are even poorer than other students.

I know I've been down this road before, but this is the guitar I'm talking about.  It's NOT a Blaze.  Trust me.  I met the maker at M.I.T.  Baddest axe I've ever played.  AND I MEAN EVER !    See Vivian.  www.youtube.com/watch

My fingers are too short.  I have to have the thin and narrow necks.  The easiest guitar I ever played was one of the "snake skin" style Warren DiMartini guitars made by Performance.  It seemed so small.  They told me they had scaled it down a little for easier playing, but I wouldn't know if that's true or not.  All I know is my little hands got around that neck like  .    .    .    .    .

The Ibanez Wizard necks are fabulous! They have 2 or 3 versions of the neck, each one is a progression of the last one. They are amazing. My personal favorite for necks is still the Jackson dual compound radius necks though. I like them wide and flat. The Ibanez Wizards are actually thinner than the Jackson`s but the same(or nearly) the same width. either one is a beauty to hold!!

Mhm. I played my uncles Ibanez a few times, and it was really easy, compared to my Strat. Nice neck, strings were really low, almost touching the fretboard... Really cool.

I never played an SG before, but it looks cool to me. I specialy like it how the highest notes are very accesible (or seem to be, anyway). On a strat, I almost have to break my fingers when I want to play above the 17th fret on the low strings.

I had a red Bich and a black Warlock back in the early 80's.  Very cool looking, but very heavy.  That's what gave them their growl !

From my experience, I think the reason that people say the SG has such a fast neck is because it's so much sleeker than a Les Paul or any other Gibson that I've ever played.  Flater, narrower and just plain easier to get around.  I'd still toss it aside for an Ibanez for playing ease though.
[Redman] Tuesday, July 08, 2008 12:56:08 AM
Fastest necks available? I doubt that, but they are great guitars overall. I think Glenn loves SG necks so much that his Hamer guitars have same kind of necks as his old SGs.

Telecaster's shape is something that I don't really like, but the guitar is excellent itself. Strats have great feel.. the bodies are excellent, but the bolt on neck sucks... But that's not part of the Strat's shape of course. I'm also sure that many Super Strats are great... Like Ibanez' Jem guitars... must be excellent. Flying V is a bit problematic by it's shape really, but its much better when playing from the upper frets than most of the other guitars... Gibson SG feels pretty good as well. Strat and SG might be my favourites, the shape.

Ibanez make some awesome guitars! No doubt about that. You`re right about the Les pauls ,they are heavy. The BC Rich that I have is light, but it`s made of Alder I think? I have held some that were very heavy(Mockingbird and the Bich)

Yes, I have nice lines...

Seriously tho, I think that the shape of a stratocaster, or a telecaster is impossible to beat. I played quite a few guitars, but I still think that those two are the best. Gibson Les Paul is like weight-lifting, imo, and same is BC rich (tho I never played a BC rich guitar - just a friends bass which is a copy of a BC Rich).

Also, some Ibanez guitars (the ones that look similar to Fender Strats) are pretty cool.

For smooth flowing lines, the Strat is hard to beat. I personally prefer the Strat type of body, they seem to fit me well. I`ve had a variety of guitars over the years, but the start is always my go to shape. the Les paul type is cool, as of recent years had some Epiphone LP`s,but  they just don`t fit me as well.
The angular bodies of the Warlock and the Splitail can be hard to get used to!

Here's a guitar I drew a while ago. I don't have a name for it, and I was thinking what you people here thought of it and maybe could help name it. If I'm not mistake, no guitar has the back end that it has and the front end is like a Beast/Warlock combo haha. Headstock is a bit of a rip-off of a B.C. Rich too.

So any thoughts on it?

I printed the page and will put it in tab for myself as to hopefully better figure out what I`m doing ,once I play it ,it will make more sense to me. Man, my wife is gonna think something`s up because I keep grabbing my guitar again every afternoon. I had gotten to where I was only diddling about 30 minutes on the weekends(if that much) lately!!

Now this is wierd, but not a mistake.  Sometimes when finishing a phrase, I'll hammer on and pull off on the B string between the 5th and 6th fret.  Then play the 6th fret on the G string ( C# / Dd ) then back to the B string 5th fret ( E ) and close it on the D string 7th fret ( A ).  It's out of tune a bit, but it's quick and adds an exotic sound that I like.
[TIMBONI] Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:21:50 PM
No.  You are right. I got confused when I translated the paragraph.  The second half starting on the 12th fret is ok, but the first part starting on the E string is like Redman said.

    5 - 7 - 8 - 10 - 12 - 13 - 15 - 17
    5 - 6 - 8 - 10 - 12 - 13
4 -5 - 7 - 9 - 10 - 12
     5 - 7 - 9 - 10 - 12
     5 - 7 - 8 - 10 - 12
     5 - 7 - 8

I think that is correct now.  Sorry if I led anybody down a wierd track.

12
9-10-12
is one that I do and that I like. I only know this because I played just a minute ago. I`ll have to actually look at where I`m at on the board to put them down. I haven`t done anything creative (aka challenging and /or original) in so long I just follow what I`ve done for years over and over. Man! I need a challenge. This just may be what I need to go again!

I've sometimes used a 'scale' that is like:

5 - 7 - 8
5 - 6 - 8
4 - 5 - 7
5 - 7
5 - 7 - 8
5 - 7 - 8

I think... hmm, but I try this scale of yours. :)

Ok G'Dude.  This is like the ladies tradin' recipes.  Now you gotta give me somethin'.
[TIMBONI] Saturday, June 28, 2008 8:22:25 PM
Those are just basic shapes.  The key is to introduce the flat 5 note into the Natural Minor Scale to sleaze it up a bit.
[TIMBONI] Saturday, June 28, 2008 8:21:16 PM
By string, starting on the low E at the 5th fret :

5 - 7 - 8
5 - 7 - 8
5 - 7
4 -5 - 7
5 - 6 - 8
5 - 7 - 8

Thats the base.  You can also tie it together with the A on the 12th fret, 5th string starting with the pinky :

12
9 - 10 - 12
9 - 10 - 12
10 - 12- 13
10 - 12 - 13 - 15 - 17

[TIMBONI] Saturday, June 28, 2008 7:53:41 PM
Oh, one other thing.  One of the coolest scales, in my opinion, is the combination of the Blues Scale and the Natural Minor Scale.  The simple Blues Scale is 1-4,1-3,1-3,1-3,1-4,1-4.  Try this one.  Let's say we start on A on the 6 string.  So, by fret, it goes 5-7-8, 5-7-8, 5-7, 4-5-7, 5-6-8, 5-7-8.  With the addition of a little tail.  If you start on the G string with the 4-5-7 you can then slide up to the 9th fret and finish it off with the blues scale on the B and E strings with 8-10, 8-10.
Very George Lynch.
[TIMBONI] Saturday, June 28, 2008 6:03:52 PM

One little trick that may come in handy.  You can really turn the tables on people if you understand that if you are in the Key of G major you are, in essence, also in the Key of E minor.   Three steps ( frets ) back and that's the relative minor key.  Now that's when you start to make "Mary had a little lamb" sound like "Get on your knees and pray" !

Aha, so basicly if Im playing a certain scale with a root in (for example) G, then Im playing in the key of G. Well, that isnt all that complicated.

Not that I want to know all about music theory (which is as shitty as it is boring). Its just that the "keys" stuff is mentioned a lot in tabs, and I wanted to know whats it all about.

Thanks guys.

[TIMBONI] Friday, June 27, 2008 7:44:11 PM
Think of keys as families of notes.  Keys are a group of notes that work well together.  Around this scales are created.  Of course there are always exceptions to the rule.  In many fusion / jazz applications the players will intentionally use notes that are technically "out of key" to create the effect of tension in the music or to lead the listener's ear to an intended "key change".  It sounds really technical, but it's not.  If you forget everything I just said and just play what you think sounds good, there is probably some place in music theory to justify it.  Music theory is almost as full of shit as psychology.  Just learn the scales and try them.  If it sounds good, go with it.  If it sounds like shit, move on.

Ive got a question for those who know music theory a bit.

What does it mean that something is in a certain "key"? I hear a lot of time how certain songs or parts of songs are in the key of E, E minor, A, ect. What is that all about?

I have the Seymour Duncan Distortion in the bridge and the Vintage Staggered in the neck of my BC Rich.I just rewired the guitar on Tuesday ,had a ground hum. All is good now.I love those ADA preamps, they are so versatile!!
Good choice on the power amp also. A tube is a tube, but the wiring in the chasuis is what makes the difference. Peavey has some grat stuff.i`m constantly watching E-bay for an older Script model 5150 head.
You mentioned the Classic 50, alot of older players seem to like that amp, Never played thru one that I can remember. The newer Valve Kings do have a good vintage tone ,but with a modern edge when using that A/B control on the power amp.

Cool links Guitardude. Yes, that is why i love tubes. THey have a ramp or sag when they are sounding on and off.  I am using An ADA mp1 And a PEAVEY CLASSIC 60/60 or 120. I never got into the MESA BOOGIE. I went with Marshalls. I like the passive pickups I use THhe screamimhg dempn on a couple of my axes. It is
a mid output pickup. I dig a lower input voltage concept, then boost it in the Amp.

Rectifier tubes do just that ,they rectify (controlling voltage) They change AC to DC and feed the power tubes their operating voltage. Now when you dig in hard to play, the tubes will "sag" due to the rectifier tube not completely keeping up the voltage to the tubes. This gives kind of a natural compression. EVH would drive his tubes above and beyond with output power, but would limit his input voltage to the amp with a variac. This was very much the "key" to his brown sound back then.
Now amps that use a "silicon diode" chip to supply the voltage are much more consistent with their output. Go to
www.mesaboogie.com  and look at the Road King head,it gives you a choice between the recifier tube or the silicon diode.
The rectifier tubes are really an old school way of doing things(but damn it sounds good!!)
Some classic Marshall Reissues have a recifier tube, like the Jemi hendrix model and I`m not sure about anymore.

Yes it lloks like the 5AR4. is a rectifer tube.  Is that like a voltage multiplier. I wonder if that thing blows as Hot
as the price tag. I just wouldnt try. Everything else is compelling except the size.  I guess for moderate volumes this unit would excell.

I`m not sure of the exact model I played thru at a little shop.I believe it was the Seville(?).I know that it had the 6L6`s as they were large tubes. The 6V6`s are not as small in relation to the6L6`s as the 84`s are to the 34`s.The EL-34`s are not that big anyway.
I believe the 5AR4 is the rectifier tube in this case, rather than the 12at7. But I could be wrong here...?
But that amp I played had one 12 that was off center , there was enough room for two 12`s in there though.

Thanks Guitar Dude. have you had any expirience with them. I stayed away from the peavey classic 50 because it was loaded with the EL84's. I like the Bigger tubes. And yes on the Rectifier tube the 12 AT, I indicated it as the (+1).

The 6V6`s are similiar to the 6L6`s,the way a EL-84 is to a EL-34.
Plus did you notice the rectifier tube listed in there?

Wow!!!! All them tubes. 3+1 in the pre. nad 2 6V6's. Prob a nice and bubly amp.
I have'nt heard of a 6V6. I guess the 6L6 is a bigger power tube. The prise is steep. 15watt, 10'speaker
The jensen is probably a good choice there. A cone with more of the high end freq. focus

An amp like that is for the purists among us that only true tube tone will do.I have played thru a similiar amp that Fender has and it`s a very good little amp.
Modifying Fender amps is how Randall Smith got his start ,and now look where Mesa Boogie is at. It all has to start somewhere, and a small amp like this is a good place to start, now if it weren`t so expensive!!

SDB,no worries about that pick. I must admit that I got a grin out of the "DreamState" comment, though I know it`s totally un-related.
Good luck getting all your affairs in order.

Thanks everyone, they are my "other kids"..

I know I haven't been around much, but my wife and I are trying to get our own business out of dreamstate and into reality. We have been eyeball deep in classes and government requirements. It hasn't manifested into anything physical as of yet, but there are many more factors involved than anticipated. In the midst of getting all this crap sorted out, we had to replace the roof on the house...

Guitardude.. I haven't forgotten about the pick, I just haven't been able to get there while the place is open. My Cat parts guy has one waiting for me the next time I have to run over there...

I am also a guy that had only two guitars over my gigging years, made me appreciate what I had!! I had 5 at one time as a teenager, but they were all copiesof various models ,not the real deal. Now I have only one and i am perfectly content with it,but am always on the lookout for that next big "deal of the day"

This Economic status of the US is terrible.. I was watching the stock market today.. I couldnt believe it.. Well I guess I can.. Look who's running the country.. A hillbilly in the whitehouse.......... lol   My brother estimated it cost him 350.00-400.00 a month for gas just to get to work.. Its taking a huge chunk out of everyones pocket.. I think Its soo sad.. How are people supposed to help their children with school, and Food.. ect....   My nephew is suppose to start college.. And his parents dont know what they are going to do...    Iam just happy to be going to see the priest ..  It really made my summer..  I have had nothing to look forward to.. In a long time.

LOL!! Yeah, I hear ya!!  Shit I make only $21 bucks an hour and thats simply not enough!! 15 years ago that was a lot of money but in 2008...its peanuts.....especially with gas prices up over $4 bucks a gallon!!!  I guess the more ya make, the more ya spend. Today,it would take $40.00 bucks an hours to just be comfortable and getting buy.But 21 bucks an hour just doesn't cut it,not at all. Sadly!

LOL!!! Yes but If I had the $ money.....I would have 30 guitars even if I don't need that many...or even would play that many....I don't know why I would have that many if I did have the cash, but somehow I just know that I would find myself buying lods of guitars if I did have the cash....kinda like people with a lot of cars!!!
I get your point though......but guitars are so awsome!!!! Now I want to buy one today!!! I won't becasue if I did I would be broke for the rest of the year!! LOL!
It would take me a full year to recover from this!! LOL!! I know better though!!

Phantom would be an awesome guitar. It is definitely a guitar that I would buy if I wanted a new guitar AND had a chance to buy one. GT or A5, doesn't really matter. Original A5 might be quite interesting actually...
