So yeah I got OWNED hardcore at the music store day before yesterday.

I was just looking for my regular light or medium gauge nicklewound strings for metal and rock.

I don't know much about strings yet so i asked about these cool looking FLATwound ones and the fucking MANAGER of the store said there all the same......

Obviously he was lying to make me buy the more expensive Flatwound ones, or he honestly knows jack shit about music and its instruments.

Flatwound strings are NOOOOOOOT the same as regular strings. There JAZZ strings. TThere completely smooth, hard to bend, extremely dull, has no balls.

And these were medium gauge, and oh my god, there the biggest fucking medium gauge strings I've ever seen. I had to file down the slots in the nut on my guitar. I tried not to make them deeper because that would fuck other strings up once I switch back, but I just tried to widen them so they'd fit.

And I can't tune higher than C.......

Looks like its Rammstein and Rob Zombie for me for a few weeks.

I was wondering why Glenn is always "plugged in" and KK isn't? I don't play guitar so I have no idea if it's a sound or guitar issue or his personal preference. I miss how they used to change sides during a show and it just seems that because Glenn is corded, he doesn't have the freedom to move around as much.  Thanks!

Joe There are many ways to hold the pick, you just have to become accustomed to the way you do it , if you change.
The way you have it in the second pic is probably the most traditional way. Rotate  the pick to where the point is pointing at the bridge, just leave yourself enough pick to still use.  Pointing at the bridge, you have a longer area to pick with, but a much shallower area. This is the way to the harmonics. You still need to pluck the string all the while slighlty controlling the oscillation of the string( not muting). Example.... when you pick the string normally, it vibrates in an oblong but large pattern. By controlling the oscillation, you make the string vibrate in a more unifrom manner that is a much smaller (tighter)  pattern. Try to lightly touch or brush the string with your thumb while you pick , it will sound dull at first, but practice and it will come to you naturally.
Now as for holding it at an angle, depends on what type of attack you want. What speed etc.
Experiment is the best thing to do, but don`t be bound by tradiotn, try whatever works for you.
I the tips of my thumb and finger to hold the pick, not the back where the knuckle is.

This is how I hold it:

[Bazookajoe_666] Friday, November 27, 2009 1:10:45 PM
Naa that doesn't help either. I don't hold the pick the proper way. With your thumb and the side of your index finger or even at the proper 45% angle. I do it all backwards.

I hold the pick with my pretty much the whole tip of my thumb, nearly down to the middle knockle. I use the tip of my index finger for the other side, and occasionally my finger finger tip at the same time..

Like this:

Joe
If you are using a traditinal style of pick (elongated triangle) then turn the pick where the longest part ofthe pick is facing the bridge and use the side to pcik with. It`s got the larger angle which actually gives you less area to pick with making the harmonics much easier. George Lynch does this and you`ve heard how he uses harmonics. I incorporated this into my picking years ago and it really does make a difference. I`ve also changed recently to the smaller Jazz picks(heavy gauge) that have the beveled edges. They work well as they have a smaller area giving the same effect as using the side of the pick.

I'm still working on my goal of learning all the rhythm parts of Painkiller by ear. I've like 85-90% done.

I literally can't do punch harmonics though, because of the way I hold my pick. So I do fake ones where the natural harmonics are. You just pick the harmonic like regular, but as soon as you do, press down on that fret and it keeps the harmonic tone, so it SOUNDS like a pinch harmonic, but its actually not. I can only do it in certain places, so that second riff in Painkiller is pretty well impossible for me right now haha.

I wouldn`t go as far as saying the Vetta has more than you will ever ned, even though it does. It`s just you will never need another amp ever again if you`re tastes in music change, the amp will change with you , or think of it this way....it`s extremely versatile!!!
I don`t know about the MkII`s and how they`re controlled.

The Vetta is like 2 or 3 times the price of MKII. And from the specs and stuff I read, it just seems like it has a tone of stuff you'd never use or need.  Although the footswitch that you can get for it to control all the built in pedals sounds fuckin sweet.

Can the MKII do the pedal thing too?

[guitardude] Saturday, November 07, 2009 4:34:12 PM
The Vetta is awesome. It`s a digital amp. It has tons of power , no matter the load you put on it (4,8or 16ohms) . Tubeamps require that you match the load by a switch on back, no big deal though. With the Vetta, you can have doing a emulation of any Marshall on the left channel and a emulation of a Mesa Boogie on the right , or vice-versa!! Any combination you can think up, it`ll do. It has all kinds of "pedals" stored internally andwith the foot controller you can get for it. That`s really all you will ever need. It would be like having a rackful of gear on your backline.
Just get two cabs for it so you can explore in stereo.
I tested one out a few years back and ended up staying several hours trying all the diferent things it can do. And I still didn`t get close to exploring it all.
The Mk II`s are tube, and that is my favorite for tone. But if you want the Vetta, go for it, you won`t be sorry.

I've been kind of interested in getting a new amp for a while and then I saw you guys talking about the Spider Valke MkII amp.1,500$ isn't a half bad price.

What do you guys think of the Spider valve MkII COMPARED to the Vetta? There both Line 6.

K2M
I have looked at the Line6 amps and I like them, I had a couple of the Line6 PODS that were good. The first I sold due to it`s complexity, I wanted to do changes on the fly and diging into a menu wasn`t what I wanted. I then went with another lesser POD but it broke.
I now have that Behringer and love it. I `ve found it easy to dial in the tones on the Behringer to work well with the EMG`s in my guitar.
Check out the new Marshall combos, The Haze and the Class5, affordable and all tube.
The class5 only has a volume, bass, mid and treble  that`s it!! I think with my DS-1 or my Silver Dragon in front of it , it`ll scream!!
Right now, an amp is a definite after christmas purchase, that is unless I get cold feet again, as usual.

When I was using the BBE,. I used it to enhance my signal after all that processing dulled it up. My EQ was set to boost the upper frequenicies and the level for solo`s.
[K2M] Friday, November 06, 2009 2:46:37 PM
I like the Id of setting the EQ flat. and getting a level boost. I would use one or the other to color the sound. I would use the bbe.
See if the signal boost from the eq sounds good. Maybe for solo's.
The Cry baby is something i dont use much. It is great for trippy soloing or funking riffs. but i never liked the way it colored my sound. they are fun to play with. But just for a while. IMO the wah wah takes over.
The wah was used as a "filter" when it was left half open/closed to give use a mid range cut/boost. to cut through. I like to go for the tone without the cry baby. It is good to have around sometimes. I never start from there.

I am making an assessment based on what i like.
JD the Eq in you signal chain is adding that desired extra crunchness.
THe BBE will do the same thing. IMO The BBE will Make your sound Sizzle. Kind of a pro mod additive.
Gives you a modernized crunch.  [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by J.D. DIAMOND from Thursday, November 05, 2009 5:33:11 PM) Edited at: Friday, November 06, 2009 1:43:05 PM

JD
That is the question of the ages!!
Here is a simple rule for what pedal in what order... process your distortion, don`t distort your processing.
The HM-2 should be first the your EQ .
EQ`s are notorious for being noisy whitenoise (hiss), if you put it in front of the HM-2 then your are distorting your noise!!
If you were to have a setup like I once had, .... this is the order you could consider
Compresser, distortion, wah pedal,eq,phaser or flanger, delay, chorus, noise gate BBE or any other type of signal enhancer.
Now that is not something that is set in stone, experiment and see what  you like. That was the order of what I had when I was gigging. The wah pedal would find itself after the eq from time to time, not sure why I would change it, just did.
Also, use a regulated power supply, not the batteries. As the battery dies, then even in the off position, the pedal will affect your signal by not allowing it to pass thru properly.
Now, with that said, there are some pedals that offer a true bypass feature when off and then the bad battery shouldn`t mess with your signal.
KK and Glenn both once said that they had pedals in their boards (interview was from the 80`s) that they never used anymore, but didn`t remove them because it may affect their tone .

All of that shit is so confusing haha.

So many different combinations of EVERYTHING. Ever little detail fucks with your tone, its insane.

[SDBinNY] Thursday, November 05, 2009 7:20:12 PM
Guitar~HM2~BBE~Amp.

If you are happy with your tone, put the eq in the effects loop and set it flat with a slightly higher output level for the boost. If you are using it to shape your tone, play with the set up and see where it fits best. Most likely the BBE will be at the end of the chain.

Sadly, I don`t have either of my Marshalls anymore, priorities changed so they had to go. I have been in the market for something smaller for a long time now, all tubes preferably, but without breaking the bank.
K2M is right on the BBE, I had one and they make such a difference, really livens things up. I also had the GE-7 that I used to mainly boost my top end for solos.
The HM-2 you have is good, you don`t have to run it WFO, they can be used as an Overdrive . with good results.
At one point I had nearly an all Boss setup consisting of a
Compressor, EQ, Digital Delay, Chorus. I also had a Dunlop Dimebag model Crybaby, Rocktron Silver Dragon Distortion and a Hush  pedal.
I still have the Silver Dragon, and I also have a Boss DS-1 that was given to me by a member of the board here. Occasionally I plug into my son`s little Fender amp and use the DS-1. Otherwise I use my newly attained Behringer V-amp 2 with headphones. I can plug in the Mp3 and wail away.

Back when I was doing gigs, I would set the volume on my Marshall (JCM 800 2205 model)at 4 and that was plenty. Occasionally, when we played a larger venue , I would do 4.5 , but that was mainly for my own sound and being able to hear myself adequately.
The JCM 900 that I had briefly a couple of years ago, was about the same as it was a 50 watter also. That one only saw action at a friends shop building where we (old band mates from several bands would get together and play) and never needed to be cranked up much.

You say bleeding as if it is a bad thing. Keeps the bone marrow busy and healthy....lol

Actually, have never been in a situation where "10" was neccessary, but blowin the dust off the china isn't a bad thing once in a while....

There is a point while playing  that you can get your speakers to resonate and really breathe, that`s when your in the sweet spot and nothing sounds or feels quite like it!!!
[K2M] Wednesday, November 04, 2009 1:19:54 PM
A good speaker cab really wakes things up.

Eminence makes a good speaker and seems to be gaining in popularity, MR. Scary uses them!!! I belive that Dimebag was using them also in the Kranks, but I`m not sure.
I replaced the Celestions in my old Marshall cabs around 1993 or 4 and used the Carvin British series speakers, there was hardly any difference between them and the Celestions.
Get out there and listen to a variety, you never know what you may like.
SDB... Jensens...yea man!!
[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by SDBinNY from Tuesday, November 03, 2009 3:37:12 PM)
[SDBinNY] Tuesday, November 03, 2009 3:37:12 PM
Personally, I have always prefered Jensens. I "grew up" with old Fenders ( 1956 Fender Bandmaster,  1966 Fender Dual Showman, 1968 Fender 2x12 thing I can never remember the name of). I ran a Boss DF2 into the Showman with a 2x15 cab and LOVED the tone I got. The 15's were old Jensens, and my father actually made the cab.

Currently I have a Behringer head and cab, and a Crate cab. Haven't got to use them much lately, so I am certain they are feeling a little neglected..

I think people just get too caught up in labels, and it is my belief that you should get out there and find what your ears like.

I am using 2 Marshall 4x12's. I am using the smaller Cheaper cabs. they are loaded with celestions.
I have always used celestions i am thinking about trying something new. I have always been pleased with the celestions.
i picked up the Marshall cabs for 300 a piece. Affordable . one can change  the speakers
SBD my ears could be scared from a lifetime of celestions do you have any suggestions.
I am checking out the line 6 cabs. just checking. I have three 4x12's I love them.

Yes, Joe, you will need a speaker cab for a head. There are many out there, so do some homework before you buy.

Precisely. Hellrider. we're gonna load it with our brand.

I like Line 6.
I have been using the UX2 interface. i recommend it. FeedBack from the Comp speakers. Very sweet.
I just picked up a Spider VI , 150Watt head. i wanted a head to go with that i would not have to freak out on. as far as maintaining and destroying.
I want the Bogner. I want that Power tube section in my line six Head.
I have not opened the Spider yet.

I do know that some of the Line6amps have pedalboards(as in controllers)  you can hook up to them and control your efx and your channel. I`m not sure as to which ones , other than the top of the line models Like the Vetta, now that is a kick ass amp!!!
Pedals should be fine thru the amp, if you have an efx loop, put them there, if not, run them in front of the amp.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Bazooka Joe from Saturday, October 31, 2009 9:01:03 PM)

One thing I don't like about Line 6 amps is all the effects. There IN the amp, therefore you gotta press the buttons. How would a effects pedal work on a Line 6 amp?

The Bogner series of Line6 amps come with Celestion speakers, which are the most sought after speakers for guitar.
I think for around that 1500 for a half stack is a fair price for entrance into the world of tube tone.
Also check out Bugera, they are owned by Behringer and make clone amps of marshalls and Peavey`s , but they sound very good. I don`t know how their longevity will be, but might worth a look into as well when you`re ready to step up into a bigger amp.

What equipment are you using?
