I'm not sure why other bands have sold more but I do know I've been a fan since 1981 & I've followed them ever since --I've liked other bands too but I don't run out & buy their cds as soon as they go on sale .

A lot of good information that I did not know. I would have to agree with you.

I think Priest lost an awful lot of ground after Rob left in '92 or '93. There was no new album until '97s Jugulator with Ripper, and for a lot of people that, along with Demolition (plus the two live albums) don't even qualify as proper Judas Priest albums, and have sold poorly.
Really, you've got to say that from the end of the Painkiller tour in 1992 up to the Reunited tour & then release of Angel Of Retribution in 2005 Priest's album sales were pretty much dormant - that's well over 10 years, while other bands have been carrying on & doing very well, thank you very much.
Also, I don't know about other countries, but here in the UK, after the Screaming For Vengeance album the band's profile took quite a nose-dive. Having toured in Britain every year from the release of Rocka Rolla to Point Of Entry, 1982 saw them stay & concentrate on the US where the single "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" had become a huge hit & given them more commercial exposure over there.
They then returned to Europe & the UK on the eve of the Defenders Of The Faith album in December 1983 for a tour, before departing to the US once again in 1984.
It wouldn't be until 1988 & the Ram It Down album before they then returned to these shores - although there was a European Turbo tour in 1986, Britain was missed out altogether - and, I feel they lost a lot of fans as a result.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO DIE TO BE A HERO? IT'S A SHAME A LEGEND BEGINS AT ITS END?
HEY PRIEST WROTE THAT IN 1978. WE ARE THE FORTUNATE ONES WHO WERE ABLE TO LIVE THROUGH THE GLORIOUS RIDE THE PRIEST TOOK US ON. TO ENJOY IT EVERY DAY. SOME DAY WHEN ALL IS SAID ON DONE OTHERS WILL REALIZE WHAT THEY MISSED. MOST POEOPLE DON'T REALIZE A GOOD OR GREAT THING WHILE IT IS HAPPENING.
LONG LIVE JUDAS PRIEST - OUR JUDAS PRIEST

2 thoughts spring to mind
the constant changes in style could contribute, with maiden, you know what the album will sound like, with priest, it changes, and that pisses people off
gull records. they issued a bunch of different packaged albums versions of the first 2, so you could go to a store, see a new tape and buy it to find that you had all the songs. I read the song lists, but others didnt. that pissed people off. and rocka rolla isnt very metal sounding.

My best GUESS would be that a band like Maiden didn't have to create a market like Priest had to. The Number of the Beast was released in '82 and sold like mad, but into an existing Metal fanbase. Priest, on the other hand, created the market, therefore selling less in the beginning, but building with each new release. I guess that theory would really hold up against most great selling bands, mostly from the '80's, but Maiden kicked Metal (as we know it now) from their conception, Priest evolved into it.
This is just my opinion, I am sure there are probably more valid reason's why than the one that I gave. It is a very good question and I look forward to reading what some of the other fan's opinion's are.

I have never understood how Judas Priest have only sold 35 million albums worldwide. I mean I am a huge Iron Maiden fan and love Sabbath as well. It says on Wikipedia that they have sold over 100 million worldwide. I think Metallica is OK and they have even sold over 100 million. Kiss has as sold 85-90 million. I really dont get it. I mean not to knock these other bands but why does everyone think this is???? Priest definately deserve to be much closer to this mark.
