A billion people have supposedly bought Extendz. I feel left out. How could so many people be wrong? It does nothing specific but I understand that "it could be fun" (as per the commercial). I think I need more fun in my life.

So they seem to believe. As I understood from the comments from that Eddie Trunk show (forgot who was also speaking on the subject..his guest), any band is usually involved in the re-master process. If not, it can and will occur without their input as they really did not anticipate such an eventuality way back when the original contracts were originally signed.

As part of the contracts, it was also common for a label to release individual tracks as they saw fit. Again, with or without the band's authorization. Here is where the bastardization comes into play. The band (or one or two members, as is usually the case) "re-mixes" / remasters the song and re-issues it and the label turns it to a subsidiary company to compile a CD. While the band (rarely ALL the band) may or may not have been involved in the original remaster, they were certainly not consulted in the release of a bargain-bin compilation. Even the photos are usually stock photos rather than any sort of original creative artwork.

That said, I am off to run! Laters all.

Agreed.  So in theory "re-mastered" is the technicality that makes it a "legit" bastardization?

[guidogodoy] Thursday, February 19, 2009 7:48:10 PM
Better said, the COULD only re-release if it were in their contract to do so.

My comments were on the original band-endorsed compilations, NOT the remasters. I really have little doubt that, as Phantom said, the originally endorsed albums were also remastered and fully endorsed by the band themselves as such a process would involve re-mixing and digitizing. It would also not be any stretch of the imagination that lesser-labels would hook onto the latest trend in re-issuing and re-mastering compilation albums based on the offical releases.

Don't know who else heard it, but Eddie Trunk went on and on in a recent show about this very common trend nowadays. Needless to say, the majority of his comments were negative as he felt (as do I) that it is all label / $ oriented.

For the 10 studio albums and the 2 live albums it was
the idea of the band and the label to remastering the
back catalog of the band.
At this time Priest wasn't reunited and have their own
label "Priest Music Ltd" which with they have released
all the material with Tim Owens.

In this times CBS/Sony have released
"Living after midnight"
"Metal works '73 -'93"
"Simply the best"
"Breaking the law"
and
"Priest Live and rare"

[Bev] Thursday, February 19, 2009 7:28:07 PM
I think the major labels would only release something like that if it were in the contract to begin with.  my humble opinion

And so Metal Works didn't make it... So i am to understand it was the labels idea, not the bands to re-release the studio albums.

[Phantom A6] Thursday, February 19, 2009 7:22:19 PM
The original "plan" for the remasters series was
to get in the frist 10 studio albums from CBS/Sony
and the both live albums of the band.
It was the idea of CBS/Sony to get
"Living after midnight"
and
"Metal works '73 - '93"
into this series.
[devils_child] Thursday, February 19, 2009 7:20:12 PM
Maybe it was re-released in the re-masters 2002.... Mine has the copyright written as 2002

Hmmm...that is strange. But I don't think it fits with the other Remasters series. Living After Midnight was released in 1997 (according to wikipedia) and the remasters weren't released until 2001.

To add to the confusion (and anyone who knows "The Best of JP" already knows the problem in that it is both a classic yet released early in JP's career), Heavy Metal Painkillers (Popoff) lists only five "official Judas Priest compilations":

The Best of Judas Priest, Gull (Feb, '78)

Hero, Hero (Gull, '81)

Priest, Live and Rare (Epic, March '98)

Metal Works '73-'93 (Columbia, April '93)

Metalogy (Sony, May '04)

ALL endorsed by the band down to the artwork. Contractual fallout with Gull and Epic locked up some of their earlier work and led to the animosity between JP and Gull / Epic. Anything outside these five (save for foreign releases of the same album) were subcontracted out to lesser labels and had absolutely no band involvement save contractual agreements vis a vis the residual $.
[devils_child] Thursday, February 19, 2009 4:57:22 PM
Right.... just let me get a note pad and pen..... I still can't agree that a band can have a "best of" only covering two albums, just because it was the first. Someone get a musical industry dictionary or the rule book and show me the passage that makes any "compilations" thereafter null and void.....

1995 "Anthology"
licensed from Gull for Japan (Japan version of "Hero, hero")
first release of the songs in Japan!!

1996 "The beast of" (Yes "beast", not "best")
licensed by Gull ("Hero, hero" different artwork)

Good point about politics.  I was never much into the politics of it all ... too much for my simple mind to digest, especially when you only hear random bits and pieces.

Love the music, Love their stage presence!!! Think the word MD used in his blog ... Quintessential!

Good to point out especially because the "Insight" series was HORRIBLE!  Sad thing is that they trusted Gull. I have plenty of interviews where they say that they are thankful for them and their support in getting their music out to the masses. Therefore the "Best Of" was certainly endorsed by the band AT ONE TIME. It is just the politics that came AFTER that made thing go south. Sad Wings (and Rocka Rolla, if I am not mistaken...no album in front of me) was a GULL release, after all. They didn't really catch on until CBS+ took them.

Common to most musicians, I suppose. Learning curve. Thank strat for the Metal God label.

Melissa, there can be only one "The best of...."
and this is "The best of..." from Gull, 'Cause it was
the first and so the first with this title too.
This is a fact and not Guido's and my opinion.

Here's the track list:

1. Dying to meet you
2. Never satisfied
3. Rocka Rolla
4. Diamonds and rust (of course the "Gull version")
5. Victim of changes
6. Island of domination
7. The ripper
8. Deceiver (Yes, without Dreamer Deceiver)

Hi Melissa, Susan & Guido
the cover from "Living after midnight" you have posted
is from the first release in 1997.
487242 2 / 02-487242-10
There are two versions:
1. The "normal" release
2. The Gold Edition

And there is the 3rd release from 2002
4872429000 / 487242 9
"The remasters" release.
Not a part of the original "The remasters" series,
but the cover is the same, with the silver coverage
from the "The remasters" series.
And you can read "The remasters" in the jewel box.

It's the same with Metal Works '73 - '93.
First release from 1993.
473050 2 / 01-473050-10
The second release from 2001
5021382000 / 502138 2
"The remasters" release.
Not a part of the original "The remasters" series,
but the cover is the same with the silver coverage
from the "The remasters" series too.
And you can read "The remasters" in the jewel box.

OK, on "Living after midnight" is written "The best of...."
but there's only one "The best of...." From Gull!!

"Spell cheked" Learn to spell, "Yank without a gun!"

DC, I only stated the obvious as you corrected me on the "Best of JP." Nope, Album was never called that but keep in mind to whom you type. An old fart who LIVED AND DIED for the "Best of JP." A standard throughout my college years. Put it on and it was an instant party. SACRED, IOW! Own it some four times in four different formats.

I hold the line. Yours is not a "remaster." It is a compilation. There are at least four others that offer the "best of." However, to an old fart like me (and many like me) there is and will only be ONE "Best of Judas Priest." Gull - the Picture disc is even the exclusive Milan release (others came around from other countries...nothing close to the quality).

Jest a purist / obsessive collector sayin' ....

Yes i know that.... I'm not claiming to own that original copy... I wish i did however. And please... do not insult my discographical knowledge by thinking i not know that Living After Midnight wasn't released prior to 1980...
I don't even know what the arguement was even about now... Bottom line is.... Best of's don't count.. because it is my understanding that in order to get on a best of song list it has been played live. And of course Unleashed in the East is contradictory because it was a live set...... I'm sure you merely suggested it to be a smart arse.... *applause*...

I am well aware the copy i have was released as part of the re-masters set back in 2002.
